I visited Summer Trees several years ago. I don't have any history of this family too much, just some names. I did visit the graveyard down the road from the house. I don't remember the name of the couple who owned the house at that time. This was back in l986 probably that I was there.I would like some more history of this family. My mother is 88 and I am sure she would like to know more. Let me know the details of obtaining information. Thank you, Judy Karr [email protected]

I have been to the Best cabin at Tallalosa and the small cemetary there. There are Mobleys and Colemans along with the Best's in that plot. I haven't cleared up the connections, but I plan to visit the site again this Nov (2001) and take some more detailed notes. I would be interested in any information you have on the relationships between these families. I have placed a few notes/photos from my visit there in 2000 on my website - if you are interested here is the address: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/e/s/Richard-Best Are are you connected to Abijah and Judah? DO you know if Judah and Huldah Mason sisters? Regards, Richard Best

Response to query regarding slave names, including Abernathy. It is possible the following persons may be of that family although this is much later in time. In 1880 Marshall Co. Census - household of Samuel Briggs in Hudsonville the following names listed as Black. Andy Abernathy - works on farm - Black - age 55 - born NC - both parents born NC. Margarett Abernathy - works on farm - Black - age 40 - born MS - botrh parents b MS. It is my understanding Hudsonville and Early Grove are in the same vicinity.

Franklin's will of December 14, 1839 mentions several slaves who were given to heirs and are likely to have accompanied them to Marshall County. They were: Kingston, his wife Aly and their children (to widow Mildred Franklin) Lewis, his wife Delsy with their youngest child Jack (to daughter Frances J. Franklin) Nelson, Ann and child Sarah (to daughter Frances J. Franklin) Nicy (woman), boy Hubbard and girl Emma (to daughter Meeky C. Franklin) Jerry, Jacob and Dick (to son Columbus B. Franklin) James and Henry (to son Jesse D. Franklin) Warren (to grandson Meshack Franklin Moore) Lewis (to grandson Meshack Franklin Hunt) Charles (to grandson Jesse Meshack Franklin) Bartlett and Jenny (to daughter Anne P. Wellborn) Phillip (to daughters Sarah H. Thurmond or Anne P. Wellborn) Frances J. Franklin later married David Abernathy. As slaves often took the surnames of their masters, these individuals may have had the last names of Franklin, Abernathy, Wellborn, Thurmond, Hunt, and Moore. (The Hunts lived in Salisbury, NC and the Moores in Sardis, MS). I would be happy to assist any researchers seeking more information about these individuals.
