I believe the John Lewis NEWSOM you mention is the same as my ggg-grandfather, Lewis NEWSOM/NEWSOME who was first married to Nancy CLARK. They appear in the Marshall Co., MS 1850 census with 8 children. By 1860, Nancy has apparently died and Lewis is living in Marshall Co. with 9 children. I have found a marriage record of Lewis NEWSOM to Mary Jane KIRKLAND on 16 Sep 1861 in Marshall County. They appear in both the 1870 & 1880 census records in Marshall County, with more children. Please email me directly at [email protected] I would love to swap information! Robin (Clark) Niell

Surnames: Franklin, Thurmond, Wilburn Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HKB.2ACI/1587.1.1 Message Board Post: What you say is true. However, slaves often show up with their former owners' surnames on the 1880 census. Whether they took these surnames depends a lot on what their relationship with the family of their masters was like. House slaves (like the ones I listed) were closer to these families than field slaves, and perhaps more likely to stay near the old plantation locations.
