    1. [MSMARSHA-L] WOODFIN family -- Marshall County, MS
    2. Hello. I'm looking for any information related to the WOODFIN family in Marshall County, MS. This family appears to have been located in the area near Waterford around 1843: John F. (b. ca 1820 TN - head); Mary Scott (b. ca. 1830 AL - wife); children: Lillian, James E., Eugene L., and Anne. All the children were baptized in Old Hudsonville Presbyterian Church before 1850. John F. WOODFIN owned 26 slaves as of 1850; the family moved to St. Francis County, AR in 1859, and by 1860 John F. WOODFIN owned 49 slaves. He may have acquired some of the 23 additional slaves through the estate of his mother-in-law Hattie SCOTT -- John was the executor of her estate. Interestingly, John F. WOODFIN had many mulatto slaves born between 1851 and 1860, and that is where my line connects to the WOODFIN line. There is an extensive WOODFIN genealogy constructed from the WOODFIN lines who arrived in the United States in the early 18th century; however, a connection for this John F. WOODFIN to the earlier WOODFINs from England is not clear. John F. WOODFIN's migration to St. Francis County AR looks to be through Tennesse -- possibly Shelby County. John F. WOODFIN died in AR in 1860, just two years after the family moved there. Thank you for your time and any clues, all of which are helpful! Deborah

Surnames: Raiford, Canon, Shaw, McFayden, Mahon Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HKB.2ACI/1603.3.2 Message Board Post: Hank I'm descended from Moses Harvey Moore and Ann Alexander of Mecklenburg County, NC. Their daughter, Mary Scott "Polly" Moore married John Canon, Jr. who immigrated to Marshall County in about 1840 after Polly died. He made the seven week trip in what has been called the "Exodus" with his sons Moses Harvey Moore Canon and Alfred Orville Canon. Their daughter Abigail Canon, b. 1786 d. 5/5/1862, was married to Cyrus Alexander. They came to Marashall County at about the same time, possibility with John Canon, Jr. She is buried near Byhalia according to Barton Williams in hhis book on the history of Byhalia. The Canons have a long-lasting relationship with the Alexanders beginning in the early 1700s in Pennsylvania abd continuing during their migrations through Maryland, North Carolina, and Mississippi. There have been many marriages between the two families and quite a few of them came to Mississippi and Tennessee in the 1840s when their land in North Carolina were worn out from years of tobacco crops. I have been in contact with a few Canon/Alexander descendants and can put you in contact with them. A couple of them, both of whose ancestors came throught the Marshall County-Tennessee area and on to Texas have pretty extensive databases.

    3. Their was a very prominent man in Moore County, NC in the early to mid 1800's named Atlas Jones. I don't know how common the name Atlas Is, but in and around Moore and Montgomery counties in North Carolina there are many Atlas Jones <insert surname here>. It's kind of like all the Wade Hampton Smiths, Wade Hampton Jones, etc. you find in the south after the War Between the States. In later court documents in Moore County I found where my Atlas Jones Martin's grandmother or aunt SUED atlas Jones - they were once close friends. Oh well, hope this vague answer helps some. 3. Dear Anne - thanks so very much for taking the time to look - especially during this busy time of year! I'll probably be bombarding the list with more questions as soon as I come up with them. The company my husband worked for closed its doors with no warning on Sept 1st so he became unemployed just in time for the unemployment surge brought on by 9/11. He has been unable to find a job as yet, so I'm having to be financially frugal this year with presents. I'm trying to make up for that by doing things I know will mean a lot to the recipient. My Christmas gift to my father this year is hopefully to do a report on his Martin ancestors. It's a family that his father and grandmother have been researching since about 1900. I'm hoping I can make some serious headway between now and Dec 25th!?! Anyway, thanks so much for your help.
