I have also had trouble getting a marriage record from the Marshall County Courthouse. I am happy to report now, due to a very kind friend I now have that document in my possession. I had sent twice for that marriage record and was told twice it did not exist. The second time I even had the date of the marriage. sterrell ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 14, 2002 9:09 PM Subject: [MSMARSHA-L] Probate Records > Leroy, you asked for address to Marshall County MS courthouse where the > probate records are contained. I do not know if Robert is a member of the family I am researching. Siblings Washington, William, Susan M., Thomas, and Anna Eliza Hudspeth were living in Mississippi ca. 1850-1860. Anna Eliza married John Erickson on Dec. 13, 1866 in Marshall Co. The parents of these children were George and Polly Ann Simmons Hudspeth of Franklin Co., TN. According to Polly's father's estate records, Polly's children lived in Mississippi and the daughter Anna Eliza was listed with married name Erickson and the daughter Susan M. was listed with married name Osien. I am trying to find them in Mississippi in a census. Joy

I have that urge once again try to make a connection someone who might have my Rebecca Denton b. abt 1830 in possibly in TN in their database. Rebecca was in Marshall Co., MS in 1845 because it was there she married John Calvin Pettus. By 1850 she is in Dodcaw Twp. Hempstead Co., AR - age 20 and then by 1880 she was in Red Colony Twp., Sevier Co., AR age 50. I do not know who her parents were, or of any siblings. This has truly been a brick wall for me for over 38 years now. I have pictures of Rebecca and know her children: William Lee, Allison Woodville, Milford, Obediah Budd, James H.. Rebecca died somewhere between Arkansas and Texas in abt 1884 while returning home from a visit with her children in Texas. She was thrown from the buckboard she was riding in when the horses pulling it were spooked by a herd of wild horses. It is unknown if she was buried there or taken back to Arkansas. Kathleen Burnett
Hi, Listers, I wonder if any of you have ever heard of Hatchie Bottoms? My father-in-law, a Maness, believes his parents, Lee Maness and Ruby Lancaster Maness, lived in that area of MS in the early 1900's. When we looked at a map, it was hard to decide which county it could've been in at that time. Is this area in Marshall County? Tippah County? Tishomingo County? Alcorn County? Benton County? I hope someone has heard of this area! This will help to center my search for them for that time period! Thank you so much, Lisa

Benjamin Ruff Family of Cornersville, Marshall County, MS. (My GGG Grandfather) lived in Marshall County . Cornersville Cornersville was the site of an ancient CHICKASAW village and mound culture. it's first white settler was BENJAMIN RUFF of HOLLOW ROCK, TENNESSEE. RUFF was a trader and came to the Chickasaw village before the Ponotoc Creek treaty of 1830-32. Ruff stated that when he came to this part of the Chickasaw Nation, the only other white was a trapper who worked along the Tallahatchie River. RUFF was perhaps the first permenant white settler in what is now Marshall Co., Mississippi. NOTES: Marshall County in the Mid 1800's was larger than today. Cornersville was in Tippah County in 1860. Cornersville was so named because it was situated at the junction of 4 counties, MARSHALL, TIPPAH, PONOTOC, and LAFFYETTE, later reduced to3, UNION, MARSHALL, BENTON. What was the main attraction to Marshall County in the mid 1840's. Could it have been the land grants or maybe the beautiful contryside? Just wondering. MWT

Thank you for sending the Cox information on the 1870 and 1880 censuses. I wish I had something to give to you. I have another question. Are there censuses for 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860? If I could find Joseph Stanford Earles Cox in earlier censuses, he might be with his parents. It looks possible to me that he might be the son of one of Edward Coxe's sons, or the son of Edward Coxe. According to the Marshall County site, "Edward Coxe, a wealthy gentleman of Scotch descent, came to North Mississippi before the formation of Marshall County and bought large tracts of land for his five sons. To William Henry Coxe fell the land in which Galena was built. This was in 1832. It is located 12 miles west of Holly Springs on the old Chulahoma Road. William Henry Coxe migrated to this section from South Carolina having spent a short time in Georgia on the way." My great grandfather, Joseph Stanford Earles Coxe (it's spelled that way on the 1870 census), was born in Georgia in 1828, and his father was born in South Carolina. So, if there are any censuses, or anything similar, from further back, they might show Joseph Stanford Earles Cox(Coxe) living with his parents. Thanks for any help, Richard Ferguson [email protected]
