I already have a good bit on the Volney Peel family posted on my website at http://users.erols.com/webmouse. However, I have very little about his brother William who was my ggg-grandfather. He and his wife Mary appear in the 1850 census for Marshall County, but not in the 1860 Census thus leading me to suppose both had died along with an infant daughter Elizabeth in the intervening decade. Their son Hunter is listed in 1860 with the Volney Peels and daughter Ellen is with the Yarboroughs. Still I am grateful to have some connection to the Volney Peels. At least the name "Volney" makes for an easy search. :-)

The Mary Davis I'm looking for was born c. 1826 in TN. She married William Peel (b. 1820 in AL). The 1850 Census has the Peels as neighbors of Charles Yarborough (b. 1801 in NC) and his family (wife named Sarah B.) The Peels were gone in 1860; their two children living with others in the area. Their son Hunter was with Peel kin. Their daughter Ellen was living with the Yarboroughs. The 1910 Census lists my g-grandfather Hunter Peel Alexander living with his "great aunt" Priscilla Duke Davis Hampton Lamb Lanier (PDDHLL). She was born in 1830 in LA and her mother's maiden was Yarborough. Does any of this make sense?

The Yarbrough-Davis relationship came through Winifred D. Winson and maybe Mary Yarbrough. Winifred Davis of Wake Co., NC married Henry Yarbrough of Franklin Co., NC in 1817. He died in Franklin Co., NC in 1824. I believe estate records of Henry and James Yarbrough who died in 1815 show that this Henry Yarbrough is the son of James Yarbrough. There is also evidence that Charles Yarbrough of Marshall Co, MS is a younger son of James Yarbrough. Winifred D. Winston came to the same area of Marshall Co, MS in about 1841 with her children, Seth Green Yarbrough and Henry Eliza Ann Yarbrough (G.G.grandmother). Winifred's father is thought to be Jonathon Davis of Wake Co, Nc. He had another daughter, Mary Davis who married Thomas Yarbrough of Franklin Co, a brother or nephew of James Yarbrough. This could be the Thomas Yarbrough from Franklin Co., NC who moved to Fayette Co. NC and died there in the 1830's.! If so, Mary may have moved the short distance to Marshall Co, where she had relatives. Winifred was close to Eben Nelms Davis and Willie J. Davis of Marshall Co. Her daughter, Anna Eliza Phillips (G.G.grandmother) is buried in their Davis Cemetary. I have some information on the Davis's and Duke's in Warren, Franklin, and Wake Co., NC, and will be glad to share what I have if you will email me. We seem to have a common problem with these families.

We do know that her son Columbus Taylor Brigance of Potts Camp (Marshall Co., but also Benton Co.) was in charge of her affairs in her later life. Do you have information on other lines than yours? I have noticed that many of the Brigance researchers have very little information on William Melvin and Lydia Brigance's descendants. That's probably because we haven't put enough information on the internet ourselves. However, I'm still new at this and haven't even figured out how to put documentation on my tree. However, the information is available if you want it. So far, our problem has been proving that Lydia B. Wallace is Reuben Wallace's daughter, although everyone else seems to accept it as a given.

-----Original Message----- From: Cora McDonnell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, January 21, 2002 3:28 PM To: [email protected] Subject: {not a subscriber} Naturalization Records I am so happy that I don't know whether to laugh or cry. For years I have been searching for my grandfather's place of birth in Germany. On all the records I've found, they only say Germany or Prussia. One story I've heard is that he came to Memphis, TN because a family from his village in Prussia now lived in Memphis. Since he was only a teen-ager, running away from German military service, he stayed with this family - that of Gustav Palm. This morning I searched the IGI database and found G. A. Palm's marriage record in 1865. He was married in Marshall, Mississippi! I found your website and began browsing. Gustavus Adolphus PALM is listed on your county naturalization records. Please tell me how to get a copy of his petition. I'm hoping it gives the name of the town in which he was born. Why am I so happy? Please thank Bobby J. Mitchell. Just by chance I found "The Gray Ghost" article he(she) wrote about G. A. PALM. It gives everything I could have hoped for, except where he was born in Prussia. I'm fascinated to learn that Mr. Palm was such a Civil War hero. If anyone can add to all this information, I sure would appreciate names of his children - any descendants. I'm going to copy the article - below. Thanks, and best wishes, Cora McDonnell Tallahassee, FL [email protected] Vol. XII, No. 4, July-Aug 1993 Gustavus Adolphus Palm was born July 11, 1839 in Prussia. After obtaining a thorough Prussian military training he emigrated to the United States. By 1859 he was in Holly Springs, MS. After his first wife, Martha, died in 1871, he married Ada Woodson. When War broke out in 1861, Gus Palm joined the 9th Mississippi Infantry. His knowledge of military strategy and drill service was of great benefit to his regiment. At one time he acted as an instructor for a company of Confederate Officers. During the Battle of Perryville, KY, he received a severe wound and was left for dead on the field of battle. He recovered from his injuries and returned to his regiment. Some years after the War he became a citizen of the United States. He had lived in Memphis for 30 years when he died at his home on the Raleigh road, near Trezevant. Although his obituary states the body was taken to Hudsonville Presbyterian Church for interment, there is a Palm plot at Hillcrest Cemetery in Holly Springs that has monuments for him, both wives, a child and one other person, who has only a first name on the monument. His obit in the Holly Springs REPORTER of Feb. 1, 1917, was copied from the Memphis SCIMITAR. The following is a quote from the 1917 paper. "BURY VETERAN WHO ENABLED FORREST TO CAPTURE CITY" "The funeral of Gustavus A. Palm 78, Confederate Veteran, who secured the plans of the fortification of Memphis, which enabled Gen. Forrest to capture the city, was held Sunday from his home on the old Raleigh road. The body was taken to Hudsonville, MS for interment. His death occurred Sunday. M. Palm was ordered to secretly map the federal fortifications. He returned safely to the Confederate lines, making possible the success of Forrest's raid into the city." And now we know the rest of the story.
