JOHNSON. From estate records of his father, Zachariah Johnson, 1858 in Lauderdale Co., AL Lewis was said to be living in Marshall Co., MS at that time. I noticed your menationing a Lewis Johnson, nephew of the Moses Johnson who died in Marshall Co., MS in 1857. Would you happen to have any place in Arkansas that this Lewis was living? I think Zachariah Johnson was living in Marshall Co., MS in 1840 because on the Marshall Co., MS webpage a Z. Johnson is listed as living on Pg. 51, and a Hardin HOWARD is listed on that same page. Hardin Howard married the above mentioned Lewis B. Johnson's sister in Lauderdale Co., AL in 1829. She was born 1800-1810, but I do not know the approximate birth date of the Lewis I am searching for because I have been unable to find him on any census record. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Ruby

Hi Lynn, George Washington VAUGHAN was my GG-grandfather. The Board of Supervisors of Benton County issued a Resolution of Condolence upon the death of Maj. G. W. VAUGHAN. And his daughter wrote "He enlisted in Confederate cause at Holly Springs, Miss., Col. Sam Benton's Miss. Regiment." But I couldn't find Major VAUGHAN in any Confederate unit. Then I discovered that Home Guards Military Ball announcement in A Southern Tapestry. And there was Maj. G. W. VAUGHAN, Col. Sam Bention and etc. (G.W. had a store in Holly Springs before the War.) I found those listed on the Home Guards Military Ball announcement had enlisted in the first MS regiments in service to the Confederacy -- the 9th and 10th Infantries. There was Lt. George W. Vaughan in Co. E, 10th MS Infantry, Capt. Samuel Benton in Co. D, 9th MS Infantry and etc. Now I'm trying to learn of any record of the Home Guards before the War. These units were in other states, as well. I know of many in Arkansas. They were just as they are described and were formed early in the Civil War. Many of these guard members later joined active military units.
Bill; I looked up the page that you were asking about in "A Southern Tapestry", (I purchased my book when I was in Holly Springs in Oct. 2001). I would be very interested in any responses that are sent to you. I have an "Ol' Southern Soldier" that I have been tracking for the last 20+ years. Hopefully, Martha Fant or Lois Sweeney has the answer. Does anyone have any information about the Home Guards? Before the War, were they involved only in Marshall County? Page 55 of A Southern Tapestry: Marshall County, Mississippi, 1835-2000 has an announcement of a Home Guards Military Ball to be held at the Masonic Hall in Holly Springs on October 18th, 1860.
