Hi Folks, Does anyone know of a Mallock/Malloch family in HS or Early Grove? My 6x ggrfa, JOSEPH RILEY SLOCUMB's (dod: 1865) third wife was Janey/Janney S. UNK who md. (December 17, 1870) WILLIAM R. MALLOCK/MALLOCH. She had a child with Joseph named SUSAN SLOCUMB abt. 1864 and a child with William named ATLAS MALLOCK/MALLOCH b. 1874. In a letter (written August 20, 1888) to his sister, Sarah Smith, William Thompson Slocumb (brother to JRS) mentions that Mrs. Malloch was still depending upon him "...in a great measure to assist and attend to her little business although her boy is now about 15 years old." I take this to mean that Malloch/Malloch died prior to 1888 but I have never been able to find what happened to either the dtr. Susan or the son Atlas. Also, what "little business" is William referring to? Has anyone ever seen a reference to any of these names in a cemetery in and around Early Grove? Other than an oblique reference in the letter, it seems these folks dropped off the face of the earth! Thanks in advance for any help. Jean Hancock in TX

Sometime after the civil war and before 1870 quite a few families came from Hall and Jackson County, GA to Marshall County, MS in a caravan of wagon trains. I have heard as many as 30 families came at that time. The ones that I am certain of were, Gilmore/Gilmer, Buffington, Evans and Simmons. While most families remained in Marshall County, a few returned to Georgia. I imagine that Wm. Ellis Buffington came at this time. According to the book, Randolph, Hawkins & Related Families, by Edith Hawkins Griffin & Joanne Powers, William Ellis Buffington that married Mary Marsaline Miller was the son of John Harlan "Harle" Buffington and Massey Booker. The book also has his death date as 1879. There is no mention of Mary M. Miller's parents. My g.g.grandmother was Amanda E. Miller from Jackson County Georgia. She married John Harlan Gilmore/Gilmer and her sister Mahulda Ann Miller married John Harlan Gilmer's brother, William Lafayette Gilmer. Both families were among those that came to Marshall County from Georgia. Amanda and Mahulda had two brothers; John Harwell Miller who married Sarah A. in Jackson, Co., GA and William P. Miller. I have no information on William P. Miller, but there is a William P. Miller on the Marshall County census, Southern district. I am going from memory, but I believe it is the 1870 census. The Gilmore/Gilmer and Buffington families intermarried a lot and it is probably worth checking the Wm. P. Miller on the Marshall County census. If you don't already have the Buffington family back to our emigrant ancestor, Richard Buffington of England, you can e-mail me direct and I will send you what I have on Buffington and connected lines of Harlan and Cope. Hope this helps rather than confuse. Sylvia Akin
