The Robert Ellis you mention may be listed in the 1850 Marshall Co census at pg 237. His age, 44, born SC with wife Jane and a large family. On page 239 is a Thomas S. Ellis age 57, listed as born in NC and wife Sarah A (Sallie) also with a large family. I have quite a bit of info on the Garrett family, on Levi only his children, but quite a bit on his siblings. They are also from the same area as the above Ellis families.

Hello List, I am researching the HAYS/HAYES family that migrated from Lincoln Co., TN to Marshal Co., MS in the 1840s. As recently as the 1950s, descendants of this line were still living in or near Byhalia, MS, but I do not know any of their names. My information is very limited as I am just starting with this line. I will greatly appreciate any and all help. This is what little I know: *The great-great-great-grandfather was David HAYS. He was probably born about 1809 in Ireland and came with his family to SC in the early 1800s. They then migrated to Lincoln Co., TN in the early 1830s. *In the 1840s David HAYS moved to Byhalia, Marshall Co., MS.with a wife and children. However, it is felt that this wife died and he married again in MS and had a second set of children. *David HAYS appears in the 1850 Byhalia census with his first wife and children, including a 2-year-old son Robert. *He had a son, Robert T. HAYS, who was born about 1848 in MS. *David HAYS appears in the 1860 Byhalia census with his second wife and children, including Robert who is now 12. *Sometime prior to, during, or after the Civil War, Robert T. HAYS moved to Lincoln Co., TN...where he had distant relatives. Family tradition states that Robert and the rest of his family differed on the issue of slavery and so he left them for TN. As far as we know, the remainder of David HAYS' family stayed in Byhalia. Family tradition also says that it was about this time that the "e" was added to our HAYES name. *HOWEVER, these family traditions do not seem to be true as Robert T. (age 22) is founding living in the household of David HAYS in the 1870 Byhalia census. Consequently, Robert T. HAYS must have left for TN some time after the 1870 census was taken. *David HAYS appears in the 1880 census in Byhalia with his second wife and children without Robert T. *Robert T. HAYS appears in the 1880 census in Lincoln Co., TN with his wife and 2 sons, William David and James Lee. Two other sons were born later. *The first son, William David, was born about 1871 in TN. Thanks you and have a great week! Linda Garland Hayes
