I am new to the Lowndes County list and thought I'd send out a query. My research is not specifically about genealogy, but I'm hoping that those of you who have had researched in Lowndes County may be able to help me. I am writing an historical fiction novel about the first state-supported women's college in the US, which is in Columbus, MS in Lowndes County. It has been known under three names: the Industrial Institute & College (I.I. & C.) from 1884 to 1920, the Mississippi State College for Women (MSCW) from 1920 to 1975, and currently the Mississippi University for Women (MUW). And of course, it has been fondly referred to as the W. I'm also interested in anything you have to share about the Columbus Female Institute which occupied the original buildings on the W campus. I am an alumna of the W, however I am not a native Mississippian nor do I live in the state. I'm hoping the wonders of modern technology can help me connect with people who know Lowndes County well. I have been researching the history of the school for the past two years and am still interested in hunting down anything that can add a personal flair to my narrative. I am looking to letters, diaries, memories, oral history, anything that refers to personal experiences of students, faculty or staff at the W. The novel covers the years from 1884 to 2000, and even a little as early as 1860. So you can imagine the broad scope of my research. Thank you for your help. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Just came back to Orlando, Fl from Columbus. Grandfather is buried in Friendship. Very good Library for local research. There is a complete record for Friendship in the library. Newspaper records date back to eary 1900. The one i needed was not there. Jan of 1914. Good luck. wljandjj@aol.com
The Columbus-Lowndes County Library has a web site, which I have linked to off the Rootsweb Lowndes County Genealogy site: <http://www.lowndes.lib.ms.us/genealogy2.html> Library</a> The email address is {HYPERLINK "mailto:archives@lowndes.lib.ms.us"}archives@lowndes.lib.ms.us. Contact Martha Sparrow, Archivist. Thus far, I have not been able to get a copy of Friendship Cemetery's tombstone inscriptions so that I might transcribe them for the web. It was done back in the 1950's or 1960's by the DAR, I believe, and the library has a copy of that. Clare Herrick, Listowner Clare L. Anyone know of on line listing &/or data from the cemetery? Also wonder what sort of resources are available in the Geneolgy Room at Lowndes County Library? What back issues from the newspaper might be at the library? Thanks, any info appreciated. Lucian Hudson
Please Please Read the following message all the way thru. I received it from one of my surname Rootsweb lists. You could received this "worm" or virus from any source, so always becareful of any email you received that has attachments. I received such a "worm" attachment recently from one of our new Lowndes subscribers and they didn't even realize that they had the "infection" on their computer. Please do not reply to this message on the email list! To: HERRICK-L@rootsweb.com Forwarded by: HERRICK-L@rootsweb.com Send reply to: HERRICK-L@rootsweb.com Subscribers: Please do not reply on the list to this message! This is a warning concerning incoming messages that may appear to have come from a RootsWeb mail list, when it was probably generated by a virus on someone else's computer. Other RootsWeb list administrators have posted notices similar to this on their lists. This is not a hoax so please do not delete it until you have read it. I received a reply to a reply that I made to a post on another RootsWeb mail list. The reply was cleverly disguised to appear that it came from that specific RootsWeb mail list that I had sent a reply to a post made thereon. The reply from a second party that I do not know quoted part of my reply to the third person who had posted the original query. This bogus reply ended with this statement as the last line: " Take a look to the attachment. " As soon as it began to download Norton Anti-Virus, NAV, flashed a warning on the monitor screen advising that it was placing said message and its attachment in quarantine. I was advised to not open it, so I did not. The attachment was: " readme.txt.pif " NAV is set to scan all incoming e-mail messages and attachments to same. NAV saved me from a problem. I e-mailed the 'sender' and told her what happened and advised her that she might have a virus or a worm on her machine. The name of the sender of this message was not the person who made the original post that I had replied to. She is very likely an innocent party who does not know what her computer is trying to do to other innocent parties. If you do not have an Anti-Virus program on your computer that is actively scanning e-mail as it comes in, it is recommended that you acquire an anti-virus program that has such a feature and keep it active as soon as you boot the computer each time that you turn the PC on. If you receive a message that appears to be a reply from a RootsWeb mail list from someone you do not know, that has an attachment with a <.txt.pif> extension, DO NOT OPEN IT!! In my case, described above, the sender of the message with the Virus laden attachment was not the person that I had replied to originally. Please do not reply to this message on the list! I am new to this list. I am looking for information of my 2nd great grandparents William H. MOREHEAD and America L. (?). William H. along with John and Robert MOREHEAD appear in the 1840 Lowndes Co. census. In the 1850 census for Lowndes Co., Robert, Susan H. and my William H. appear in the same household. William H. and A. L. appear in the 1860 census for Van Zandt Co., Texas. This census states that William H. was 35 and A. L. was 37 and that they were born in Alabama and Georgia respectively. I'm not sure if William H. and America L. were married in Mississippi or Texas. Does any of this information connect to anyone on this mailing list? Thanks. Rodney Shultz
The only Moreheads I see in my database are Eugene Leslie Moorehead, born in 1886 and died in 1954 in Artesia, MS. I know there were more of them earlier in the 1800's, but since they were not my own family line, this is the only one I have listed in my database. They happened to live next door to my grandparents. Clare
There are 3 Ellis families listed in the 1830 and 1840 Lowndes Co. census records, William Sr., William Jr. and James. Is anyone researching these families? I'd like to hear from you if you are. Thanks, Jan

I am a newcomer to genealogy and my interests in History are inbred. I am a direct descendent of Judge Stephen Albert and Mary Frances OWEN BROWN, through their youngest son, Reverend Richardson Owen BROWN, my Great-Grandfather. I have a copy of: "SOUTHERN-BORN AND BRED, A Genealogical History of the Family of Judge Stephen A. and Mary Owen Brown of Columbus, Mississippi" Embracing Dr. W. Lowndes Lipscomb's History of Columbus, Mississippi, During the 19th Century with Addenda" Compiled by Estelle Rogers Vaughn, 1972 In addition, I am a MAYFIELD from Monroe Co., MS and have a copy of "MONROE COUNTY HISTORY", Published by the Monroe County Book Committee, 1988 If I can be of assistance with either of these publications, please let me know! If it were not for the kindness of others helping me in my search, I would not know what I do today about my Forefathers. It is my hope to help someone else along the way. My families, both the Browns and the Mayfields settled the areas of Lowndes and Monroe Counties before MS was a state.
