The Leonard Loftin I have, b 1654, PA, d 11 Apr 1720, Craven Co., NC, did m Elizabeth. His father was Leonard Loftin, b 1616 in England, wife unknown. Sons were William, Leonard, Cornelius. I have Delilah Stephens' father listed as Matthew Stephens. I don't remember where I got some of my sources. I do know some came from a book in the library in Lincoln Co., MS. Some of the places of birth that have been mention for Loftin/Lofton's are different from the ones I've seen here. Barbara

The William Cooper I’m searching for was born 1752 in Sampson Co., North Carolina, and died circa Dec 1821 in Lawrence (Lincoln) County, Mississippi. He was the son of Fleet (?) Cooper, Sr., and Marguerite Coore. William was an early settler of this area and built a mill on what is now Cooper’s Creek. Capt. W. C. Maxwell, who erected a new grist, saw, and rice mill, later acquired the site of Cooper’s original mill. I find his son Fleet buried at Fair River and one reference to William as a Baptist preacher.

Yates age 30 in the 1930 census for Oak Grove, West Carroll Parish, LA and born in Arkansas. But unfortunately the link to click and see the census was not there (sometimes that happens with Anc.com). I can't imagine that this is yours because he would only have been born in 1900. If it is yours, then he should have a Death Certificate as they were required after 1913. The DC should have the names of his parents and their place of birth. If you know the state where he died, you can obtain a DC from that state. I noticed a large number of Yates in Kershaw Dist., SC in the 1850's. Wish I could help more. Ann

Of course, it was probably too early for your Hugh Yates but when my Rev. Nathan Morris left Pike Co., he moved to Holmes Co. where he preached until his death. He moved about 1835. Later his son and my ancestor moved to Carrol Co., MS and was there in 1860 and married in Carrol Co. Martha Anne McCrary who was born in Lawrence Co. I'm curious if these 'folk' kept in touch and passed the word that Carrol Co. was the new place to move or what. I wonder if there was an exodus of folk from Lawrence Co. for Carrol Co.? Do you know where your Hugh Yates went when he left Lawrence or are they still in the same area? Ann

First, in my files I have that a Giles Thomas Loftin supposedly born in Washington Co., GA married Delilah Stephens, parents unknown. He was the son of Ezekiel Loftin, Sr. born in Dobbs, Craven County, North Carolina, who died in Oakvale, Lawrence Co., MS. and one of his two wives, Jenny Linder. There might be a pattern of migration that your Stephens family took with this family. The other thing as a clue is that my Morris family who moved to Pike Co., MS (this adjoins Lawrence Co.) and married Martha Ann McCrary of Lawrence Co., was born in Marlboro Co., SC. If the other migration pattern doesn't work, then it might be possible that a group moved to MS territory together from Marlboro Co. before the counties were named. Originally my Morris line was Quaker from Pasquotank Co., NC but my Nathan Morris became a primitive Baptist preacher before he moved to MS from Marlboro Co. Hope this might give you place to look! Ann

I have not seen this book that tells the original name of a Loftin as you have it but had been told it was originally Laughton/Laughtin. I descend from Cornelius who is a brother of Leonard and they are the sons of the first Cornelius with land pattens/James City/Charles City, Va (18 Nov.1674). Of course, there are many Leonard' but this Leonard, I've been told, probably married an Elizabeth ...possibly Parker. Some people call him Ludovic Leonard Loftin. Your name seems familiar so we may have made contact in the past! But, if not and if you would like to share, my email is aharwellp@hotmail.com Ann

Leonard Loftin b 1654 d 1720 is the first of the Loftins in America. The family name was originally Ludwig, it was recorded in Craven County, North Carolina and was never used again. Leonard Ludwig chnged his name to Leonard Loftin. This research was completed by Isom Stephens and published in the aforementioned book. I think the book is out of print. Isom said he was donating all of his research to the Mormon's in Utah. Hope this helps, sorry was no link. Howard Yates
