    1. Re: Commodore Perry as a Given Name
    2. Just a side note to this.......not really anything to do with this individual/family as such but would like to point out. A name such as this is not that unusual and I have seen several instances of "Commodore Perry"; I have several "Judges"as well as at least one "Major" in my own ancestry. This points out the need to always have a written record reflect a spelled out given name but NEVER a title - that should always be abbreviated. I know many spell out a title such as Major, Judge, Doctor, etc. but this can be easily construed as a given name if one is not careful. Does not happen that often but as this family shows it can. Ms Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Lawrence/557 Surname: Carney, Tullos, Wallace, Lambert, Douglas ------------------------- Darlene, I, too, have listed as the date of death for Nancy Carney - 2 Nov. 1863, but I cannot remember where I got the date. I failed to put it in my computer. Nancy's Mullins children are not listed in her estate papers. Nancy and Pollard Mullins are listed in 1850 Lawrence County census with nine children, Green, Joel, Elizabeth, Martha, Jackson, George, Mary, William, and a six month old male child with no name. Sorry, I couldn't give more help. Doris

    3. Posted on: Lawrence Co. Ms Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Lawrence/555 Surname: Carney, Williamson, Mullins, Wilks ------------------------- Barbara, In my notes from other researchers I show a note that in Lawrence Co MS "in 1864 Felitiana Mahalia P. Williamson, half-sister of Floyd Virginia Carney sued and received guardianship of the child as both [parents] Nancy Wilkes Mullins Carney and Elijah Carney were deceased. At the time of this transaction, the child was being cared for in the home of Green B. Mullins, her half brother." This would seem to confirm that Mahalia is the daughter of Elijah Carney and Mahala Tullos and married to a Williamson. I found Everett Williamson age 26 farmer, Mahala age 17 and what appears to be Lewis age 1 living in household 156 of Lawrence co. 1850 census. There is also a male age 24 that appears to be Henry Williamson. There are other Williamson families nearby. Other listings show Mahala [Mahalia Purity] as born 1828, but this census sems to show her as born 1833. I don't have any other sources to compare for determining the correct date. The Doyle Baker homepage on FTM shows Mahala as b. 1828 m. to E. L. Williams instead of Williamson. Similarly I have been given Clarissa Williams and Williamson as the wife of Mahala's brother Carrol Carney. Do you know if Clarissa is connected with Everett Williamson? Thank you - Darlene

I didn't find these sources last time I was able to use the FHL. I seldom can access the FHL due to their few hours conflicting with my work hours. I will look forward to searching again :-) I had Nancy's death date as 2 Nov 1863, but I don't have a source recorded. Could you tell me if this is confirmed in the estate records. Did she die in Lawrence county. Are her Mullins children listed in her estate record with any details or grandchildren? Thank you for your help

Ms Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Lawrence/551 Surname: Carney, Tullos, Wallace, Lambert, Douglas ------------------------- Darlene, Yes, I agree with your identification on the census as being Carney households in #125, 126, 128 & 129. Copies of Elijah Carney's estate were made at the Lawrence Co. Court House from the Probate Dockets & Wills Packets. Nancy Wilks Carney died in 1863 and there is a packet for her, also. The final settlement of Elijah's estate was not until about 1869. John Carney's estate was found in Marion County, Conveyance Book C. Also, on film - Marion Co., MS Land Deeds Vol. 1851-1861 (pg. 482-1039) at MS Dept. Archives - Marion Co. Roll 3. I am sure film for both estate records can be ordered from the LDS Library. Hope this will help. Doris

I would love to see the full information from the John Carney estate and Elijah Carney estate. My husband is a descendant of Nancy Wilks Mullins through her Mullins daughter Elizabeth who married Ebb (Elbert W.) Reid. Do you agree on my identification on the census as households #125, 126, 128 & 129 being the Carney households even though the name appears as Curney in the information I have? I would like to know more about why the Reid family is in Household 122. I found marriages for other members of this family in Lawrence co., before and after 1850. Elbert Reid who married Nancy Wilks Mullins Carney daughter Elizabeth Mullins is in the Reid household. Thanks for your information. Where could I get the more complete documents of the estates you referred to? Darlene

    3. Posted on: Lawrence Co. Ms Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Lawrence/538 Surname: Carney, Tullos, Wilkes, Mullins ------------------------- Fay, Have you checked the 1850 Marion co. MS census? On the 22nd of Aug 1850 - Wm ? Rankin enumerated John Curney next door to E. Curney family. John was 70 a farmer. E. Curney is listed as 44 a Miller born in Tenn. with M. Curney age 47 (wife) born in GA. The children P., T., S., J. age 15, 12, 10, 8 with C. Peavy age 2 male Of the Curney children S is male the others are female. I believe the family #129 is Elijah Carney with wife Mahala (Mahalia) Tullos Carney. These children are the younger children Mary Polly, Thankful Ann Patience, John Simeon and Lucretia Jane. I am not sure who the Peavy child is. Elijah's oldest daughter Talitha is with her husband Isaiah Smith in Lawrence co, in 1850. Daughter Courtney is in this census family 126 with her husband John Ballard and 2 children. Son Carrol Carney is in family 125 with wife Clarissa Williamson. The John Curney (Carney) is of the age to be the father of Elijah Carney but I have not done all the research on this yet. Most of the other people in this area of the county seem to be related to each other in some way. Some names are Yawn, Thompson, Spiers, Johnson, Hammonds, Tullos, Farris, Elliott and Reid. Zora Olsson has some information that shows Elijah Carney was in Marion co. in 1830, Pike in 1840, Marion in 1850. Zora said he probably died in Marion co. but some of the family was in Lawrence co. Zora has a death certificate for Mary (Polly) Carney (m. Daniel Westly Wallace & Moses Rials) which proves her mother was Mahala Tullos and father was Elijah Carney. I just found a FTM Home page for Doyle Baker that has some information on this family in a file Descendants of John Carney. Some of the information adds to my information, but some of my data is not in his information. I have not yet corresponded with Doyle. I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you can expand on this information. [email protected] Darlene

Ms Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Lawrence/535 Surname: ------------------------- According to some Wallace family members, and someone tracing Nelson lines, Elijah Carney is supposedly the son of Ikenaby Choctaw who was a signer of the Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty and that Ikenaby's wife was a white woman by the name of Jane Kearney and their children took the last name and changed the spelling to Carney. The only thing I know for sure is that Ikenaby did sign the treaty but am still looking for documentation. Fay
