I found an application at the Texas State Archives for US Military Service and sent it to the National Archives with the information that I knew ( my ancestor's name, lived in Duplin Co NC, etc). The National Archives sent me a reply that they had found information on him and requested that I send $5 so they could then send the info to me. They did not want the money unless they found something.
