I am almost certain it is George Washington Morgan, but have no proof. If Wesley Deskin's second wife, Julia Lanier, wrote a letter about her husband's parents being killed in Texas, on January 1, 1839, the date of the Morgan Massacre, then I would sure like to see it. I am also searching for any information I can find on this family. I have quite a bit on Wesley Deskin and Nathan Lightfoot, but still do not know the name of the people who raised Wesley, after he was left without his father. I had always heard that, and I know he was about 7, and that would make the date of his father's death, 1839, for Wesley was born in 1832. However, I do not know the name of the man who took over the job of raising him. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

They are my gggrandparents as my ggrandfather Harvey WRIGHT, born Jan. 14, 1841, was your James Berrymore Wright's younger brother. I have copies of flyleaf pages from Joel WRIGHT'S family bible (original in possession of my mother) which list the birthdates of most of Joel's children. If you are interested, I would be glad to Email you a scanned copy. The quality is not all that good because the old inks had burned through the flyleaf paper, but they are fairly legible. My information on the Harrington side is limited to Mary Ann's birth date and marriage date, so I would be very interested in what you have found in the Harrington line. I would also be glad to share what I have on the Wrights, which is mostly limited to direct forebears. Have you made contact with Janet Durst Sweet Nicholls (Sweetjanet@aol.com)? She is also interested in these same lines as she is a descendant of James Berrymore WRIGHT. Kind regards, Rudy Matzner Charleston, SC

My John Joseph Brown b. 1883 and his brother, William just might be the sons of John b. 1857. I have heard it said his name was John, but no proof. I will be in Meridian, in a few weeks. And I hope to get to the county archives. If I find anything I'll give ya a holler. The funny part is, I lived out on Meehan-Savoy Road for years. Near the Goodwater Church. lol Their old stomping grounds. Thank you, Mitch

I was interested in his daughter, Martha, my wife's ggrandmother, at the time and wasn't interested in the other descendants. Martha married John Henry Elam and they lived in Clarke Co, MS, after their marriage. However, I know that William Lafayette Brown had at least 4 children and I have listed the information I have below. However, William Lafayette had 2 brothers that your William could be descended from and William Lafayette had 3 sons, one of whom was William born abt 1855. I suspect that there may be some probate or deed records splitting William Lafayette Brown's property in 1889, but I haven't look for the records. I confess that when I saw the surname Brown, I kinda got a little discouraged. I was able to find William Lafayette Brown's father William's probate records and discovered all William Lafayette's brothers and sisters, but since! I had Martha locked up from census and marriage records, I didn't worry about anything else. 1 William Lafayette Brown b: 10-30-1836 d: 09-23-1889 Lauderdale Co., MS bur: Goodwater Cemetery Meehan Junction +Sarah A. Junius was born abt 1820 in either Maryland or Virginia (conflicting census reports). During the 1830's and 40's he performed marriages in Greene Co, AL. Junius Newman married Mary A Phillips on 27 Feb 1847 in Perry Co, AL. (There was no Hale County seperating Greene and Perry until 1860's.) On the 1850 census, he and Mary are found in the household of Bryant Gulley, with no children, in Greene Co, AL, with both he and Mary claiming Maryland as their place of birth. In 1855 he is appointed to the Livingston charge in the Gainesville District of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the Alabama Conference. In 1856, he is appointed to the Enterprise charge, Clarke Co, MS, in the Macon District. (Several of the E. Miss. counties belong to the Alabama Conference.) In 1857, he buys land in Lauderdale Co, MS from John Shackelford and his wife Phebe H. The land is in the area between Sageville and Lauderdale Station. Several other land deeds indicate he purchased large landholdings in the same area about the same time. By 1859, he is riding the Meridian circuit, which includes the Methodist church at Marion. In 1860 his family is listed on the Lauderdale Co, MS census, Dwelling 308, Family 294 J.E. Newman, 40, Minister M.E., 9000/8000, VA Mary 35 AL Virginia 12 AL Mary 10 AL William 6 AL Ann 4 AL Thomas F. 2 MS L. Shackelford, 28, physician, AL On Aug 8, 1863, his son Thomas Foster Newman, b. June 27, 1858, dies and is buried at Sageville. In 1864, records show he is serving as the Presiding Elder of the Macon District. In 1865, he is assigned to the Oktibbee Circuit. On July 23, 1867, his daughter Virginia Newman marries Dr. Lee Shackelford in Lauderdale Co, MS. This is the year he sells all his property in Lauderdale Co., gives his wife power of attorney, with the explanation that he is going to Brazil as a missionary. What happened to him after that? Was he one of the Southerners who refused to be governed by the Yankee reconstructionists, disappearing into Brazil, never to be heard from again? Or was his missionary tour a short one and he returned to the states? Where? Who were the parents and siblings of Junius and Mary? Their siblings? This message should supercede previous messages in which I named Rev. J. E. Newman as James. There was a transcription error in one of the indexes. Sorry.

On the 1860 census for Lauderdale Co, MS is the family of G.A. Freeman, 33, farmer, b NC, wife Mary, children James L. and William A. Living with them is my ggfather John N. Johnson, 16 yr old farm laborer. We suspect a family connection between the Freemans and Johnsons, but have never been able to prove it. The marriage record for the Freemans says Gidion Allen Freeman married Mary Ann Rebecca Taylor on 7 Mar 1855 in Lauderdale Co, MS. Would love to find out anything else about this family you can tell me. The name Freeman is used for a given name in the children of John Johnson's sister Abigail Johnson who married John W. Mooney. The father of John and Abigail Johnson was Jeremiah F. Johnson and we suspect the F. stood for Freeman. Also the mother of John W. Mooney was Frances Taylor, not sure if she was related to Mary Ann Rebecca Taylor, but would like to find out. What else can you tell me about the Freemans and Taylors?
