This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: WAIT Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AKB.2ACI/1266 Message Board Post: In the Lafayette County Heritage Book on page 692, there is a history of a WAIT family, F714. This family history includes two WAIT brothers, James Matthew & Carroll A. It mentions that James Matthew died in 1850. What happened to Carroll A.? I have been unable to find any information about Carroll A. other than what is in this book. Any information that anyone can give me about these brothers and their descendants will be greatly appricated.
If you do not get a reply with the answer you're looking for, I suggest you send an SASE to the SKIPWITH HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, INC. PO Box 1382 Oxford, MS 38655 with your query enclosed. Last time I was at the Society's room in the Oxford/Lafayette Co. Library, I saw a lot of information on the WAIT/WAITE family in the vertical file. I'm sure that one of the volunteers there can help you.
UpDate: What became of Carroll Waits; Lafayette County Heritage Book, C67 PARIS, pgs. 178- 179. Authors: Annette Waite and Kathy / Cathy Kisner (deceased) pg. 178 last column, "the earliest land transaction for a church is recorded in Book I., page 667, on October 24, 1860, where C. A. (is this CARROLL?) WAITS, et. ux. deeded to Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church a one acre lot in Sec. 30 (This is not a very good description of location, since a Sec = 640 acres NW, NE, SW, SE?) . This may have been the old Elim Primative Baptist Church built a mile west of the Post Office. It was a log building with a large rock chimney. There was a cemetery there with tombs dated before the Civil War. This is probably what is now know as the Hamblett Cemetery. {(No, this is not the Hamblett Cemetery, it is in the SW 1/4 of Sec 25 Range 3W, I have a 1977 Lafayette Co. MS. Ownership Map with the cemeteries marked. EMC) Sec 30 is in R2E This land would have been on the old Oxford hwy now CR 224} "Among the members of the this church (old Pilgrims Rest) in 1887 were JA McMillian, Sarah McMillian, N. E. Kelly, ME Barton, MA Guess, Amanda Guess, SA Shearer, J. Watson, Mary A. Watson, Martha Watson, GW Davie, Racheal Davis, Wm. Walker, Stephen Moorhead, Lucy Moore, Peter Moore, EA Mender, Martha Meader, Elders EA Mender was the Moderator and Elder Wm. Guess was the clerk... Pg. 169 Third column,... Post Masters: ...CARROLLE A. WAITS appointed Jan. 1853. (served until next man was appointed in 1855. emc) I hope this helps solve your question. blessings ; Evelyn Crocker Lafayette Co.
