I figure she doesn't have a headstone so she would not be in the cemetery books. They were very poor. I visited with a lady, who volunteers at the Oxford library, for the genealogy dept. She was the one who suggested I go to the funeral home in Water Valley as she had gone there. Since I am in Texas, don't look like I will get there anytime soon. In 1900, they may have just buried her and didn't use a funeral home. I sure appreciate your effort. Thanks so much

    3. Good hearing from you, Bill. Thanks for adding to my post concerning the history of the boundaries changes. Yes, Paris did remain in Lafayette County , WE are within a mile of the Calhoun County line and I believe the Yalobusha County line is five mile from the old Paris town limits. Paris is no longer an incorporated town , she is a community of loving people, we receive our mail as PARIS MS but no post office here, it comes from Bruce in Calhoun Co. The people west of Paris old line receive their mail through Water Valley. We, who live within the Paris boundary have a choice of a Paris address or Bruce Address. Banner between Paris and Bruce does still have a post office in an old fashion general store, which some would call an convenient store. I still have been unable to find my Grandmother Crocker's death certificate, she died in 1927 on the Benton and Marshall county lines. I have written twice to the MS vital Records in Jackson and they couldn't find it. I went to the County seats of both counties and found that in 1927 the Furniture store were still furnishing the funerals. But, I found through the Skipwith Historical Society's Fall 2004 , "LAFAYETTE COUNTY HERITAGE NEWS" Newsletter that my Great Grandmother, Bettie Crocker's certificate number could be found in the "LAFAYETTE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI DEATH CERTIFICATES 1912 -1924" MDAH Mircofilm Roll #V362-1. This newsletter begins with the Cra's through Dil surnames. A person may order the death certificate from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson , Ms. (I don't have the full address off hand) but most likely they have a web site. Skipwith has been publishing certain number of this subject beginning in their Summer Newsletter, which I have a copy and will find it and see if the Adair name has already been publish, I advise the querier to join the Skipwith Historical and Genealogical Society to receive the next issue of this newsletter which is due out soon. See our Lafayette Co MSGenWeb site for more information on Skipwith membership at http://www.rootsweb.com/~mslafaye . Thanks again Bill for refreshing my memory on the Counties formations. But, it didn't apply to our querier's here I fear. She was requesting a look-up at the Water Valley funeral home. Keep up the wonderful work you are doing with the mailing lists and look-ups, we all appreciate you, any way I do. Evie Crocker Paris, MS. 3. It't always a good idea to check changes in county history for movement of county lines before giving up hope. Yalobusha County was divided in 1852 to provide the eastern portion of the newly created Calhoun County. Then in 1870, the southern portion was ceded along with portions of 2 other counties to form the newly created Grenada County. In 1872, a large part of the SW corner of Lafayette County was given to Yalobusha by act of the Mississippi legislature so tha the Mississippi Central Railroad's facilities would all be in the same county, Yalobusha. Paris was and is in Lafayette County in spite of all these changes. By the way, I found the death location of my great grandfather by checking the records of the local funeral home, and there is no record of his burial anywhere, so have concluded he must have been buried on the family farm or that his marker was one of that deteriorated quickly and could not be read when the cemetery listings were compiled. Good luck. Bill Ward

    3. Hello, I would like to remind everyone that Yalobusha County was divided in 1857 {If I remember correctly) and part became Grenada, part was given to Calhoun and the southern part of the County beginning at Water Valley was once Lafayette. Also, there are many graves in all cemteries that are marked only with sandstones and some tombs are missing. So, I suggest you look in cemeteries in the eastern part of Calhoun and the northern part of Grenada Counties. Hope this will help. 3. Hi, Barbara, Excellent. At least I found the correct family, although not the right person that has you stonewalled. I might be able to help further if you know when and/or where John Sr.'s first wife died, or where/when he married Ava/Eva. I'm taking much interest in this particular family because it's very likely that Elizabeth P. SPIRES may be part of my extensive SPEARS family out of Ireland. I have them back to the birth of William SPEARS in 1731. If you have any connection to Cabarrus or Mecklenburn counties, NC with your SPIRES family, please let me know. On the off chance that the former wife might have died in Lafayette Co., I checked every LEWIS entry in the cemetery books I have. Nothing for any female with this surname who died prior to 1860. I was surprised also at just how few LEWISes there were, since the name is one of the more common ones. By the way, LEWIS is another branch of the family tree, but mine are found in Shelby and Fayette counties, TN. I enjoy helping others to solve a puzzle, so don't hesitate to get back with me if you have other relevant clues. 3. Barbara, The surname LEWIS caught my attention because it occurs a few times in my family tree. Unfortunately, none of the people you named are in my tree, but I went a bit farther in my material to look. Specifically, the 1870 census shows only one John LEWIS in Lafayette county, MS. The family data therein looks like this: 1870 Census, Township 9, Oxford, Lafayette Co., MS Page , family # Lewis, John 56 M Farmer NC Avan 37 F Keeping house NC Jno. 16 M At home MS L. 14 M At home MS William 12 M At home MS Jackson 12 M At home MS (Note: I did not find this family on the 1860 census of Lafayette Co., MS.) I suspect that the Jno. Lewis, age 16, could be the same one you are looking for, but can't offer definite proof. A John Cyrus LEWIS, b. 1853, is mentioned in the Lafayette County Heritage book in 1 of the 2 family articles, but he married a PAGE in 1873. Finding a John LEWIS is like finding John SMITH - one of the 10 most common pair of names in the English speaking world, I've read somewhere. Good luck with the research.
