I'm looking for info for a Mary Sharp who married Elisha Webb. This Mary Sharp was born November 28, 1823 and died December 30, 1892. Somewhere I've seen Nellie as being a part of her name. I believe Mary and Elisha's first son, William, was born in AL, and the other five sons were born in MS. This leads to believe that they married in AL. Does anyone know when the Sharps came to MS? Thanks for any input.

First, go to http://www.msgen.net/co/lafayette/index.html. Then click the link Lafayette County Cemeteries from USGS (65). Then click "Webb Cemetery" from the list. Then click View USGS Digital Raster Graphic (DRG). Click the "Largest" map size in the upper left hand corner of the map. Zoom out until you see the town name of Tula. Including the red square that Tuls is in, count down 4 red squares. Then count one red square to the left. The road that cuts through the top and bottom of that square is CR 493. Between it and the Potlockney Creek is a tall hill top. Zoom in on that hill top and you will see a badly rendered rectangle made of dotted lines with a christian cross in it. That's Webb Cemetery. If you have to go there, let me know and I'll put together a verbal description of how to get there. Good luck with your search, Paul Bruening

    2. Evie, Just a short addition/correction to what I wrote about the location of the Thweatts. The Lafayette Co. 1850 census copy that I have indicates that on pg. 279 it shows that Isham and Elizabeth Thweatt lived in dwelling 743, Miles G. Thweatt (the son my husband descends from) lived in dwelling 744, John James Thweatt (another son) lived in 745 and Fred Thweatt (another son and wife, Jane, mentioned in the Dooley article as having moved to Paris) lived in dwelling 746. They seem to all have been neighbors. Hope that helps. Judy

    1. Re: [MSLAFAYE] Lost Cemeteries of Lafayette
    2. Evie, I am very sorry to misname the Library in my last email. We have been to the Skipwith Genealogy & Historical Society's room on the upper floor of the Oxford Library and I should have been more careful when mentioning it. I looked back in some correspondence to see if I could find the names of the cemeteries we were told might contain the graves of Isham and Elizabeth Thweatt. Two email contacts I found a couple years ago on this list (thankfully) are Amanda Canter, who grew up in the area but now lives in MO, and Lisa Morris Coleman, who I believe still lives in the Oxford area. They both descend from children of Isham Thweatt, though different lines than my husband. An older relative of Lisa's told her that Isham and Elizabeth Reeves are buried in Union Grove Cemetery. Sadly, I have not been able to contact Lisa since before our visit to the Oxford area a year and a half ago. Her older relative (98 yr.) whose father was Robert Edwin Thweatt (son of William Isom Thweatt), supposedly had some very promising things to share with her, but I don't know how that turned out. She was told there was a Bible and a diary, documents and photos. I don't know whether she ever was able to view these with the older relative and I don't know whether this older relative is still living. We were so excited to think of the information this person possessed, but, as I said, I did not hear any more. Amanda thought that the Thweatts might be buried in the Wilkes-Williams Cemetery, which is now on private property. That is the one that Amanda's cousin, Geraldine Bowles, was kind enough to help us find and we walked through it with her. We were not able to locate the Union Grove Cem. Geraldine seemed to think they would be in one of those two cemeteries. Neither Amanda or Lisa think that Isham and Eliz. Thweat had marked stones, so it will probably be impossible to know the burial place for sure unless there is some old family Bible or other records(yet undiscovered) which would help us. (which we were so hoping Lisa's relative could provide.) As far as location, I'm not sure. The copies of the Lafayette Co. census for the years 1850 and 1860 that I have, do not have that district info on them. I need to do more research to find that out. However, another copy of an article by Janie G. Dooley (found at the Skipwith Historical Society and shared with me by another Thweatt descendant) gave some information about Isham and Betsy's son, Frederick Thweatt: " Sometime between 1842 and 1844, Frederick and his wife, Dicey Jane Murray Thweatt, and their little daughter Parmelia, moved from Kentucky to Lafayette County, along with some other relatives and friends named Murray and McCain. They settled in the hills near Paris..." Thanks for your interest and help. It is so appreciated. Judy Stone in Michigan p.s. Lisa and Amanda, if you're still on the list, I'd love to hear from you again. If you can add or correct anything I've said, please do.

    3. Hello; Pardpn me, but that is the Oxford Lafayette County Library, and the Skipwith Historical society has a room upstair as their room. If you wolud include the names of the two cemeteries it would be helpful. Or We could assist you better. FYI, part of Lafayette county was taken into Calhoun and Yalobusha Counties after the 1850 census were taken. Could you pinpoint what part of Lafayette Co they lived in , did the 1850 census give a district or post office? Many are working to identify and find any grave or cemtery still lost. I just found a mention of a Hankin or Hankan family cemetery located on land at the y intersection of 7 and 9W but it is not marked on the county map. Found it when I was editing this family's page on my Early pioneer Families http://www.rootsweb.com/~mslafaye/ Thanks for your information. Thank you, again. 3. Hello, I live in Paris communnity, and am quite active in the old pioneer cemteries which many were located on homesteads. I am also web master of Lafayette and Yalobusha Co MSGenWeb Project, plus assist others in searching their genealogy or lost families. Stokes name I have not run across, I have researched most the Land index in Township 10, range 2. If Your Stokes' family owned land they would be in the old land indexs, Paris area is in Township 10 Range 2. If he was buried in the Paris Memorial cemetery and only had a sandstone marker, many graves in the center of this cemetery was lost when a yard maintence service removed the stones to keep from mowing over them. They were all put into a pile. There are thirteen unknown graves in my Crocker Family Graveyard on Cr 428 1 1/2 mi. from Paris Cemetery. I know my grand aunt had children burned in a fire as she was and they all may only have sandstone markers. Believe Great grand uncle J. P Kirby may be buried there all the bible said was at Paris. So, some others outside the family may be buried there. also, my great grandparents had hired hands who lived on property. If your Stokes' grave was plowed up looks like they would let you place a memorial stone in his honor and place a fence around it. Do you not know where his property was? Let me know and I will be happy to work with you to find where this grave and property was located. 3. Paul; This cemetry is indexed in the current Cemetery Books, but there are many new graves, as it is currently receiving burials. The best and easiest route is taking State Hwy 331 either from Bruce or at Cornish (state 334 from Oxford) take 331 s. look for CR 428 turn West on 428 the first road north (CR 493) go abt 1/10 to 1/2 mi and cemetery will be east of road. Or coming from Water Valley or Banner, at the Hwy 315 and 9W intersection go into Paris , when the CR 430 and 428 split, continue straight on CR 428, abt 15 miles the first road north will be CR 493. Turn onto it go abt 1/10 to 1/2 mi and cemetery is east of road. Well defined, parking and sign. --- pbruenin@yahoo.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to > this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AKB.2ACI/1256.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > Hey, > I just acquired the GPS coord.'s for Webb today. 3. The Webb Cemetery is a family cemetery, it is also known as the Huckaby Family cemetery. It is included in the Skipwith Historical Society's Cemtery Books, which you may order by going to http://www.rooksweb.com/~mslafaye/books.htm . This cemetery was saved several years ago and is currently being used for burial. It may be reached from Paris by turning off 9w at State 315 east, go about 1/2 mi. to where CR 430 and CR 428 splits, keep stright on CR 428; go about 15 mi. until you come to CR 493 , the first road to the right from CR 428, go about 1/10 of a mile from intersection and cemetery will be on your right. Large Sign says WEBB Cemetery. Or coming from Hwy 331 N. from Bruce take CR 428 W. go to first road (CR 493)to your right, same distance 1/10 from intersection of 428 and 493. These directions are found on the Lafayette Co. map. 2. Hello, I would like to underscore what the Stokes researcher wrote. I'm very appreciative that someone is undertaking this task. My husband and I spent a day at the Skipwirth Library in Oxford a couple years ago and an email "cousin" from MO arranged for us to meet a cousin of hers who lived in Oxford. She very thoughtfully went with us looking for two cemeteries that might have my husband's gr-gr-gr-grandparents' graves. She could only find one and, of course, there were many unmarked and deteriorating stones. We never found anything substantial to confirm where this lady thought they might be buried. I realize we might never find such proof, but am glad you are trying to substantiate some of the older, less-known or unlisted cemeteries. My husband is looking for more information on Isham Frederick Thweatt and wife, Elizabeth (Reeves) Thweatt of Lafayette Co. who were on the 1850 census there after moving from Marshall Co. KY with some of their family. Family records say that he died or was murdered in Lafayette Co. in 1863. My husband's line (through son, Miles Green Thweatt) moved back to KY before his father's death and bought his father's land there. His parents, Elizabeth and Isham, remained in Lafayette Co. and are, reportedly, buried there. Thanks again. Judy in Michigan
