Posted on: Lafayette Co MS Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Lafayette/11180 Surname: CLEMONS, CLEMMONS ------------------------- Hi, By chance, I discovered who I think was my gguncle. He had registered his birth info in 1917-1918 in LAFAYETTE CO.,MS. I know he didn't live in this co.,but he did live in Chickasaw and probably Webster Co.'s. His name was CHARLIE C. CLEMMONS,b. Oct 2, 1882.His parents were WOODSON D. AND NANCY WALLACE/WALLIS CLEMMONS.They originally came from Tuscaloosa and Pickens Co.'s in Ala. After they moved to Ms.,they supposedly dropped an 'm' from CLEMMONS. Charlie finally ended up in Phillips Co.,Ar,although it was also thought that he moved off to Calif.Until I found this birth regis.,I thought he had dropped off the face of the earth. If anyone knows anything about CHARLIE C. CLEMMONS,would you please contact me. Thanks, Dawn

Hi Pam Thanks for the look up, I have no idea who this Lillian Phillips is. Does anyone on the list? Pam, would mind checking, to see if any Dover are listed. I have found some in Pontotoc Co, but when visiting MS, I have not had a chance to go through ALL Lafayette Co, marriage books. I did spend a day with Annice at the court house trying to though:) (she found my Grandmothers:) She was not in the index! Oh, I must mention to other list members, if you go to the court house and browse through the marraige books, some people are not index, you may need to look at every page, in the book, that their marriage year is close too. Thanks Patricia Researching Dover, Phillips, Hayes, Franklin and Long. Pam Howard wrote: > > Patricia, > > I found nothing on Pinkney or Fieldens. > > In Vol. 2 of Lafayette Co. I have a Jonathan DONHAM who married a Milbery (Milly) PHILIPS on 1 Oct 1799 in Warren Co, KY. They went on to Warren Co, Tennessee, then on to Shelby Co, Alabama. From there, they went to Mississippi and settled around Lafayette, Yalobusha, Calhoun counties. As I understand, they settled about the junction of where the three counties meet. Jonathan died in Lafayette Co, Mississippi in 1858. Milly died after 1859. I believe that her brother, Sylvanus Philips went to Arkansas and settled in what is today Philips County, Arkansas. He went on to become a state representative, and the county was named after him. I also have HENLEY, SEAMANS names in the area. This is my maternal line. My father was from Illinois. I was born at my Grandfathers home in Pine Valley in 1934. Pine Valley was located near the Turkey Creek Baptist church. The town(?) is gone today. I only spent about the first three months of my life in the area, so I do not know much about it. I have been back to visit my mother on occasions and to do genealogy research. My mother returned to the Water Valley, MS area to spend the last 15 years of her life there. She has since passed on. Harriet, This passage came from the Lafayette County Heritage Book: "Splinter is located six miles south of burgess and was settled in 1848. the village was named for a little creek on which it is located. Splinter Creek was supposedly named because of a hurrican which once visited the region and splintered the forest along the creek. Among the pioneer settlers were the Anderson and Saffaran families who purchased this land from an Indian named Ish Tap Ha. A post office was established April 24, 1896 and discontinued Oct 31, 1931. Postmasters were Emma Tatum April 24, 1896 to March 23, 1914: James M. Tatus March 23,1914 to October 31, 1931. Dear Lafayette Co. listers, I live in Austin, TX and cannot make a trip to Oxford, MS. I called the Oxford Eagle newspaper and was told that copies of their archived papers were stored at the Chancery Clerk's Office at the Court House in the main square at Oxford. I called that office and was told that they have the papers stored in their basement, but do not do look-ups and that I would have to come in person or hire a lawyer (???) to do this for me. I want to find out if there is a news article or any other information in about February 1845 about a "cyclone" or "hurricane" in the area of Splinter Creek, Lafayette Co. (may have been Calhoun Co. at that time). Supposedly, "Spinter Creek" got its name from a storm that came through the area that splintered all the trees in the forest along the creek. I believe that my gg-grandmother, Harriet Evelyn PHILLIPS Hanson was born during that storm on a farm along Splinter Creek and am hoping to find some documentation to confirm this. I would really appreciate help from the Lafayette Co. roots-web listers and will gladly pay for costs incurred for copy and postage. If anyone is looking for help on kinfolks who migrated to TX from the Water Valley, MS area after the Civil War, I will be happy to return the favor. On my side, associated MS family names coming to TX are: HANSON, GOFORTH, PHILLIPS, McCRARY, JOHNSTON and BOYD. FYI: My gg-grandfather, Judge J.O. (James Oliver) HANSON, m. Harriet Evelyn PHILLIPS, and his brother-in-law, S.S. (Smith Sanford) McCRARY, named the town of Water Valley, Tom Green, TX, for the town they left in MS, about 1873-74, after their home town of Water Valley, MS. The majority of those original emigrants from Water Valley, MS are buried in the Water Valley, TX, cemetery. Any information that can help fill in the blanks with any ancestors in MS will be much appreciated. Harriet

Mary Caruthers married William P. Gordon in Lafayette Co. in May of 1855. By the 1860 census they had the following children, including her two children from her first marriage: William A. Caruthers, b 1842; Catherine E., b. 1844; John Gordon, b. 1855; Mary Gordon, b. 1857 and Robert Gordon, b. 1859. This family does not appear on the 1870 census for Lafayette Co. Do any of these names look familiar to anyone or does anyone know what happened to this family? Pam

Her father was William Jenkins, shown as a retired merchant in the Census of 1920 in Lafayette County. Mabel was born around 1871 but do not know birthplace other than MS. According to "The Handybook for Genealogists" published Sept 1999, Yallobusha Co, Mississippi came from the Choctaw Cassion in 1830. It was one of the original counties.
