    2. Felts, Linda
    3. I would like to know about the Thaxton Cemetery as well. I am looking for a Joseph Dickson; Mary Hamilton Dickson and a Joanna Williams Smith. It is my understanding that the Thaxton Cemetery is in Oxford. Is this correct? Thank you for your time. Linda [email protected] > -----Original Message----- > From: Peggy A. 1. Re: [MSLAFAYE] Cemeteries of Pontotoc Co, MS
    2. This message is related to the cemetery in PONTOTOC, Mason Co., TX, an area settled by pioneers from Pontotoc, MS in the 1830's. I was on my way back to Austin from San Angelo, TX and decided to stop in Pontotoc to see if I could find the old (original) cemetery. This is a very, very small town these days, with most of the inhabitants quite elderly. I found a kind lady who gave me directions to and finally located the cemetery on FM 501. She warned me that it was real overgrown as there wasn't anyone left in town who could tend the cemetery, since they are all old folks these days. No one she knew of had ever made a list of the burials there. I told her I was looking for PHILLIPS graves, and she said there were a "passle of Phillips" in Valley Spring's cemetery just down the road. I stopped at the old Pontotoc Cemetery, (no sign or markings on the road) and I was horrified at what I found. The only way in was to walk through tall weeds, full of grasshoppers, black beetles and flying insects. As I was wearing sandals, and I know all about rattlers, scorpions and tarrantulas, I VERY cautiously made my way across to the cemetery. It is in a state of complete ruin. I was able to locate only three graves, which I photographed. I know that there are possibly somewhere between 100-200 graves there, but most are covered by waist-high weeds and mule ear cactus. For the history of Pontotoc, TX, see the following link: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/PP/hlp39.html I had hoped to find some family surnames, mainly PHILLIPS, that may have come from MS to TX in the early 1870s, but there was no luck at this sad ruin. I decided that I was not curious enough to risk snake or spider bites, so I left feeling very disappointed. Just a few miles East of Pontotoc on Hwy. 71 in Llano Co., TX, I easily located the Valley Springs Cemetery. What a difference! This is a state-designated Historic Cemetery, maintained by a Cemetery Association, beautifully landscaped, with a list and a map to all of the graves at the cemetery gate. There were quite a few PHILLIPS buried in Valley Spring, TX, but I did not recognize any of the names as related to my family. For a brief history of Valley Spring, here is the link to the History of Texas Online: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/VV/hnv3.html Note: I made a list of the Phillips names at the cemetery and will be happy to send those to anyone who may be interested. Also, if there is anyone in Pontotoc, MS, who suspects they may have ancestors in the area of Pontotoc/Valley Springs, TX, let me know. I go out that way fairly often and will be happy to check the Valley Springs cemetery again. Just please, don't anyone ask me to trek into the old Pontotoc cemetery again--I'm still picking the grass burrs off my clothes and itching from all the chigger bites I got--sorry, but I'm not going in that cemetery again. 1. [MSLAFAYE] New Book on Lafayette County
    2. George or Melanie Halsell
    3. Some folks on the list may be interested in a new book that has come out. It is entitled _Faulkner's County: The Historical Roots of Yoknapatawpha_, by Don H. Doyle. It is published by the University of North Carolina Press. I have not seen the book yet, but here is the description I read in the _Chronicle of Higher Education_: "Traces the history of Lafayette County, Miss., the main source of Faulkner's inspiration for the fictional setting of Yoknapatawpha; covers the period from the arrival of Europeans in the 1540's to Faulkner's death, in 1962." I sure plan on having a look. George K. Halsell [email protected] Surnames: WOOTTON/WOOTTEN, JOHNSTON, MARTIN, SANDERS, MANN, et al.

    1. [MSLAFAYE] Lee Family in Lafayette, Pontotoc and Yalobusha Counties
    2. James A. Ellard
    3. LEE, MORRIS, FLANNAGAN I am looking for an indian woman, probably Choctaw, named Sally, who married an older Civil war veteran named Lee around 1867 in Alabama. I do not know Lee's given name, but suspect it may have been Carrol. I do know that he had at least three sons before the Civil war, named William, Jim and Tom, from two pre war marriages. William had a store in Oakland City, Yalabusha County, MS, which he sold, and was moving to Oxford, Lafayette County, MS when he died. William MAY be William Mathias Lee, born Sept 29, 1844 in St Clair Co, AL. Jim Lee had two wives, both named Molly, and two daughters, one living in Oakland, and the other in Yellowleaf. Tom Lee died in Thaxton in the home of Andrew Carroll Lee. Sally had a son, Andrew Carrol Lee, and two daughters. One daughter, named Rebecca, married a Flannagan. After Lee died, Sally married a Morris and had a son named Albert. This family moved to Texas, but later moved back to MS at the urging of Andrew Carrol Lee, who lived in Randolph, Pontotoc County, MS in 1900 with his wife, Sally Belle Galloway, a daughter, Vera Lavert Lee, and a son, George. Any help in tracing Sally and Lee would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to learn as much about the siblings of Andrew Carrol Lee as I can. Jim and Catherine Ellard

    3. Nancy, Do you have any information on the Old Lebanon Church, Lafayette County, MS, including its early members? My great great grandmother, Mary Ann Furr Starnes was a member. Her father, Allison Furr and his brother, Tobias, help establish the town of Toccopola. Mary Ann was born in 1836 and died in 1910. I visited the Old Lebanon Cemetery abt. two years ago to get some information off my relatives' tombstones. 3. Does anyone know if the Lafayette County Cemetary book has been or will be updated anytime soon... At one time I had thought of taking pictures of the tombstones in various cemetaries and putting them on a CD, but I don't have a lot of time to devote to that. Would anyone in the Oxford area be willing to go around with me on Saturdays and take pictures of tombstones? Thanks Robby McCain Anchor, MS >From: "Peggy A. 3. The Tate County Historical and Genealogical Society in Senatobia, MS has a copy or two also.... I do know that the Williams D. McCain Library and Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi doesn't have a copy yet... Robby McCain >From: "Sandra F. 3. Peggy, I have watched for a long time hoping someone would mention the old Lebanon Cemetery. I know that members of my McCord and Gordon lines were charter members of the old Lebanon Church. In fact, their son-in-law Frank Patton was pastor there for several years in the mid to late 1800's. Do you know if anyone has indexed this cemetery? How big is it? I have a John McCord (Revolutionary War Soldier from SC), his wife (name may have been Betsy McCord), son James T. McCord, Rosa "Rosey" Ann Gordon McCord, and Ezekiel Gordon that I have not been able to find their burial place anywhere. Based on land records, etc., I believe they may have been buried in the old Lebanon Cemetary. Can you tell me how I could find out (w/o coming to MS)? By the way, I have been told that Rosey McCord and Ezekiel Gordon's sister and husband Hugh Kirkwood are buried at the Sarepta Cemetery you mentioned.
