When did they start recording death records and who would have them, for La fayette county.Im looking for a Drucella Anderson around 1930 or Dovea or Dovie Anderson peggy billings
Federal law required deaths to be recorded and kept on file at the state level in 1912. Most states were in compliance by 1913 or 1914. You can go to the vital records website and get the address for sending in a request. I think there is a link to it from either the Lafayette or Yalobusha county page. Or you can go to http://www.rootsweb.com/!msgenweb and link to it from there. Linda, Thought I had sent you a copy of the directions to Thaxton Cemetery? It's not more that 15 miles from the Lafayette County Line.... I checked the Pontotoc County Cemetery Book to no avail on any of the names...They are just not in there...This book has been recently published, though some of the cemeteries were not as updated as we would have liked because of lack of help to get them updated...I do believe that Thaxton Cemetery was updated...There are several cemeteries on the Pontotoc/Lafayette line that are not in the book...Springhill cemetery being one..... Sure wish you luck on finding them.... Linda: All of my mother's ancestors came from the Thaxton area and it is not close enough to be have been a part of Lafayette county. If you have any questions about this area I might be able to help you. RC
Thaxton Cemetery is in Pontotoc County. There is not a Thaxton Cemetery in Lafayette County. RC
Thank you RC. Would the cemetery by chance be real close to the county line where at one point it "might" have been part of Lafayette County? I think this is called grasping at straws!!! Thanks again for your kindness. Could someone tell me where Thaxton Cemetery in Lafayette County is? I am trying to locate the graves of Joseph Dickson & Mary Dickson Smith and quite possibly Drury Jackson Pitts. Sandra My mother was Nola Denton (1903-1996), dau of Harry (1874-1954) & Willie Lancaster Denton (1877-1957). Her brothers were James Thomas (1899-1983) and Bennie(1913-1994). Granddaddy Denton had a furniture store on the square which Bennie took over after his death. Mom graduated from Ole Miss in 1926. She left Oxford in 1928 as she didn't like the heat. She moved to northern MI where her brother, J. T., worked as an engineer. That's where I was born and grew up. D. Lou Ritter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra F. Dear Lou, Sounds like a fascinating but very sad story about the brothers fighting on separate sides and shooting each other--I imagine it happened a lot more than one would think. So far, I have not come across any similar circumstances on my Hanson family side, as it seems that they were all firmly planted in the south and on the side of the CSA. It also sounds like you are already searching with the expert--George Goforth. I've corresponded with him some and he did have some information on Thomas Jefferson Goforth and Sarah Ann Hanson that he provided to me. He is a great source. Another source in MS is Don Mabry. If you don't already have their email addresses, let me know and I'll send these to you. Thanks for your reply, Harriet
Harriet My g-g-grandmother was Nancy Potts Goforth who married James Ira Eskridge in NC. They came to MS around the Civil War first to Chickasaw Co., later to Lafayette Co. I have varying information about when they moved. May have come from Spartanburg, Cleveland or other Co in NC--not sure. I don't have Thomas Jefferson in my data base. I have George T. Goforth's book and there are several Thomas J. & Thomas Jefferson. If you have his date of birth &/or death I'll see what I can find there. My Goforth line is Nancy Potts>George>Preston II>Preston I>William>William>Miles>George Preston Goforth II and his brother John Preston Goforth fought on opposite sides of the Battle of King's Mt. in Rev. War and supposedly shot each other to death. Such interesting stories to be found.
