    2. Gene Philips
    3. I've replied off list to all who asked. Below is the preface to the listing in the Lafayette county cemetery book. CONFEDERATE DEAD AT UNIVERSITY OF MISS. A list of soldiers buried at the U of M was made in 1924 by Mrs Calvin Brown. This list was made necessary when all markers were accidently pulled up. The monument was erected in 1939 by the UDC. More names are on the marker than on Mrs Brown's list. Approximately 100 names are confirmed as being buried here. The other names were given by relatives who "just knew" their relatives died and was buried at the U of M. (inscription from monument) HERE REST MORE THAN SEVEN HUNDRED SOLDIERS WHO DIED ON THE CAMPUS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI WHEN THE BUILDINGS WERE USED AS A WAR HOSPITAL, 1862 - 1865, MOST OF THEM CONFEDERATES WOUNDED AT SHILOH; A FEW FEDERALS OF GRANT'S ARMY; A FEW CONFEDERATES OF FORREST'S CAVALRY; EVEN THEIR NAMES, SAVE THESE KNOWN BUT TO GOD.
