    2. Sam was my Great Uncle. My grandmother was Mary Ruth Woodward and she married John Franklin Goolsby 29 October 1902 in Lafayette Co MS. The Woodward and Peoples lines are road blocks. I know that John James Woodward was grandmother's father and beyond that is a mystery. Would you please give me some info on Sam and his family? I will share what I have. Betty

    3. Good luck talking to anybody at the Oxford Courthouse. I was there in July and the person who I talked to was pretty rude and extremely unhelpful. Sorry, just venting. [email protected] wrote: > FIRST - I strongly advise you to talk to a VA rep at any courthouse! I did this and found out there is a NEW REGULATION concerning headstones and IF the government will pay for it. If the soldier has a private stone marking the grave already, they WON'T pay for the stone. Bummer. They will inspect BEFORE the stone is denied/approved. They go to the cemetery. BEWARE. I am also trying to get a stone for my husband's ggreat grandpa buried in Calhoun County. His private stone is held together with steel bars and the VA has it's hands tied regarding a military stone placement/reimbursement. > > ============================== > Visit Ancestry's Library - The best collection of family history > learning and how-to articles on the Internet. > http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library

    2. Gail A quick question before we start? I received 5 notifications in my e-mail account that you had posted a reply to some of my postings. I was only able to find this one! Are there other posting that you left for me. If there is, please left me know the specifics. If not they most have a bug in their e-mail program. Anyway, I would love to help you if I can. Could you send me more info. on Mary. When she was born and her parents names, and the dates of her other marriages. I will look in all my Lafayette County Books and see what I can find. Regards, Bruce

    2. Anita I found their marriage in Volume 3 of the Lafayette County MS. marriage bonds on the date you specified. I could not find William J. in the 1870 census record as a head of a household. It is possible that he was living in someone else's household and would not be listed in the index in the back of the book. I will try to go page by page but it will take some time. There is a S.S. McCrary age 26 and M.C. age 20 with their 3 young children. The only others are the children of John C. McRae who was my GGGrandfather. You probably have seen my posting regarding them. If I can be of any other help, please let me know. Who knows we my even be related!! Regards, Bruce

    1. [MSLAFAYE] Re: Smiths in Lafayette County
    2. Think I do have the connection to the Walker-Carter-Smith line. Haven't figured out how the Walker lines fits in yet BUT: in 1900 E.L. Walker got the marriage license for Dora Calista Smith (dau. of James H. Smith and Nancy R. Gardner Smith) and Daniel H. McLarty. About 1892 a J.W. Smith married a "Miss S.A. Carter" in Lafayette Co and J.H. Smith signed as bondsman. This J.W. Smith was John W. Smith listed in the 1880 Pontotoc Co census with his sister Dora and parents James H. and Nancy. John was b. ca. 1871/2 if they kept records correctly. We could never find him again after the wedding. Did he stay in Commanche Co? If so, was there a connection to the Sandlin/Sanlin family? We think so. Marriage of John and Sarah might have been earlier since I don't have my records with me. I think it is about right though. Please let me know! My husband was given just two initials for his first name and was told that he was named for his grandfather but this was told wrong as it is really for the "long lost brother" of his grandpa Ben. Please contact me.

    2. Hi- I haven't heard anything yet about Toby Tubby - I have been doing my own research but I probably don't have anything you don't have - Toby Tubby's Ferry, his land grants, his wives, how he died and was buried, etc. I have one line of his family - my line - and that's it. If I have anything you'd like to know about I'd be happy to share it. Please let me know if you have more than this. I'll be out of town for about 2 weeks but I'll check my e-mail when I come back. Thanks, Kara Shea

    3. Gene, James A. Rankin died (I believe) in 1862-1863. His brothers were serving in the CSA, Patton Rankin is buried in Lafayette county, and Theopholis is buried in Calhoun County. Another brother, William, lived in Alcorn county for a time, unsure where is buried. Do you have any meniton of James? 2. If you get any responses about Toby Tubby, I hope you will be willing to share. As you may know, two organizations in Oxford are working to get language needed for a historical marker for Toby Tubby. I will be pleased to share what I have.
