My Wells and Pate lines were from Lafayette County, Mississippi in 1860 and 1870. My great great great grandfather was Samuel W. Wells and his wife was Kessiah Belcher Wells. Some of the family names for the Wells line are Deekand Holland and Pate. My great great grandmother was Virginia Wells daughter of Samuel W. Well and Kessiah Belcher Wells and she married Benjamin Pate on August 7, 1856 in Lafayette County. My great grandmother Frances Pathena Pate was their daughter and she was born December , 1861 or 1865 there is some confusion on her exact year of birth. I can't seem to find the 1870 census record to confirm 1861 or 1865. John J. Wells(son of Samuel W. Wells) married Lilly D. Deekand May 9, 1866 and Benjamin Wells(also a son) married Francis S. Holland August 4, 1856 all in Lafayette County. Any information on this Well's line would be greatly appreciated. Kesiah and Samuel were married in Amite County November 27, 1822. Thanks Soni
Thank you! That is very helpful information...I don't know where I got the information about it being part of Calhoun, but I'm glad to be corrected. Harriet

Sorry, but Water Valley, located about 9 miles west of the Calhoun county line, has never been in Calhoun County. Water Valley straddled the Lafayette/Yalobusha county line until 1872 when a portion of Lafayette County was given to Yalobusha by the Mississippi State Legislature to satisfy the request of the Mississippi Central Railroad for taxation purposes. Calhoun county was formed in 1852 from parts of Yalobusha, Lafayette and Chickasaw counties. Source: Map Guide to the U. S.
