Edmund Gilstrap and Mary E. (Hanson) Harper were married in Lafayette, Mississippi 2/27/1881. Edmund was a widower; he had 5 grown children by first wife Mary Crow. Mary E. (Hanson) Harper had one son, Lewis Harper, b. abt 1870. Together, Edmund and Mary E. (Hanson) Harper had 3 more children: Joseph Washington Gilstrap, Enoch Gilstrap, and Sarah (Sally) Gilstrap [my grandmother]. They moved to Texas about 1893. Edmund died in 1894; Mary E. died in 1895, and the 3 children went to an orphanage. I'm looking for any information about Mary E. (Hanson) Harper and Lewis Harper. I know Lewis came with them to Texas and died in Dallas, TX abt 1941. I don't know anything about Mary E.'s parents, siblings or first husband. Some cemetery restorers in Comanche Co., TX just found Mary E.'s unmarked grave. I'd love to find out her birth date and other information so her grave could be properly marked and recorded in their local history book. I don't know which county in MS any of the children were born in; I just know this couple married in Lafayette County. Any information or clues greatly appreciated. Vicki Hill

Bill, Would you mind checking the will and probate court records indexes for the name McCain. My McCain's moved to Lafayette County from Berrien County, GA in the 1840' s. I do not know if they moved b/c other family members were there but the will/probate records could provide a clue. Also, we believe my ggggrandfather's mother may have died there as she was with them in GA in 1840 and was not with them on the 1850 census in Lafayette. (although I guess it is possible she died en route.) Anyway, if you have a free moment sometime, the lookup would be much appreciated. Denise [email protected]
If any on the list has access to the Lafayette County census for 1850, I am trying to find which WARD family Frances WARD resided in. I have only the index to the 1850 census which shows WARDs on census pages 31, 82 and 116. Yalobusha County marriage records show that on 10 Nov 1853, she married William McDONALD. Recent correspondence with a McDONALD researcher indicates that they moved in the 1880s to Comanche Co., TX. Thanks in advance for your assistance, Bill Ward Lafayette County Coordinator

No, Sandy, I am not related or connected to either of these two people, as far as I know, and I have over 7,000 ancestors and living relatives catalogued. Ruth, I am interested in your Wilson connection. By chance are you connected to Matt (Massacilla/Massmiller) Wilson and Mary Elizabeth Thweatt Wilson. william, do you have anything in your books on phillip wolf/e or any wolf/es or martin???? thank you so very much. ruth wolfe wilson
William, Do you have a listing for Nunn or Parker? Thanks Tonya
Bill, A few months ago, Gene Phillips offered to look up in the Will books an Aaron and/or William Phillips of Lafayette Co., but the book was "missing." Do you know of any other sources to find a Will or probate records for Lafayette? I'm looking for William Phillips, lived on a farm along Splinter Creek, died after 1856 and before 1860 census. Aaron Phillips probably died in the 1860s or early 1870s. Thanks for any information you may be able to provide. Harriet
Harriet, Yes, I have the 2 revelant book. The Will abstracts cover the period 1836-1898 and the probate court records abstracts cover the period 1836 - 1858. I checked both books for the names you sent and did not find either of them; in fact, there were no PHILLIPS by that or any variant spelling listed in either book. Sorry for the negative news, but at least you have an answer and have eliminated another possible source. George, I can offer you a little help with this one with an excerpt from the 1860 census. He is recorded at family # 1278. Allen SAUNDERS 33 M Farmer $1,000/$300 GA Eliza 33 F GA Mary 10 F MS Ellen 8 F MS Robert 6 M MS Nancy 2 F MS Sarah 6/12 F MS He is listed on both the 1850 and 1860 tax lists as Allen SANDERS, and owned 160 acres of land, farming corn and cotton. A Ben L. SANDERS is listed among the several dozen men who were early settlers or land speculators in Lafayette County; I mention his name only to suggest that Allen may have been lured to the area by this man, possibly a relative??? I did not find any of this family in the cemetery listings and there was no will recorded in the county for Allen SAUNDERS/SANDERS. Like so many did after the Civil War, I expect he moved his family to TX or elsewhere. This is a beginning. Perhaps someone else on the list can fill in some gaps for you. I just visited the library last week and purchased both volumes. Hello. While perusing the LDS website, I came upon a citation for one Allen Hodge SANDERS, who married Eliza ALBRIGHT on 17 Dec 1849 in Oxford. They had a son, William. Eliza ALBRIGHT had previously been married to Reuben SIMMONS, and they were married 29 Aug 1822 in Madison Co., GA. I am hoping someone on the list can help me with Allen SANDERS's background - I have both HODGE and SANDERS roots in Madison Co., GA, as well as links with Lafayette Co. Thanks very much for your help. George K. Halsell [email protected]
