    1. Re: [MSKEMPER] African American Burtons In Kemper County
    2. Well I am not sure if there is a connection but I am descendant from Burtons who at one time resided in Kemper County.? I will have to go back and review my information but will keep your info on file.? My Burton ancestor was James Polk Burton. He was born in North Carolina?in?1843.? When he was five years old he, his mother and sister were sold at auction.? He and his sister were sold to two Burton brothers in Kemper county.? When slavery ended, he found his sister and carried her on his back from Kemper County to Meridian looking for?their mother but they never found where or who she was sold to.? He eventually married Mary Ellen Shumate and they lived in Meridian.? They had nine children. ?I am a descendant of their daughter Annie Burton.? However, before he married Mary Ellen he was married to another woman and had three children with her.? I am told the children were named James, John and Savannah.???We have been unable to find the descendants of those three children.? ! If we are not connected to your Burtons by blood then we are probably connected by plantation.?I will keep your info in mind as I continue?my research. His gr-grandfather was Edward Burton who married Ellena ?. Some of their census information is listed below. His grandfather was Egertis "Girt" Burton who married Mary Anna Parker. His gr-grandfather lived in DeKalb, while his grandfather moved to Meridian, Lauderdale County and married Mary Anna Parker shortly after his move. They married shortly before 1920. After Girt died, Mary Anna moved the family to Chattanooga, TN, probably in the early 1940's. Below is the census information that I have found. I am particularly interested in finding out who Edward's father was. I can not find them in the 1900 census. 1910 Kemper Co., MS, Beat 2, District 27 (p. 20) Edmond Burton, male, black, 40, first marriage, married 14 years, b. MS, father b. VA, mother b.
