    3. John, I just made my first trip to Kemper County this past Monday and Tuesday. The library in DeKalb does have a pretty good genealogy section considering that their courthouse burned in 1881 with a complete loss of records. One thing that they do have is an extensive file on cemetery listings. The library staff was very friendly and as helpful as they could be. I don't remember his name, but there is one young man who knows a lot about the history of Kemper County and may be able to steer you in the right direction. He works half days and comes in at 12:00 noon. As for the courthouse, they were not much use to me. About the only thing that I was able to get from them was a copy of the latest map of the section where my ancestor owned most of his land. It showed how the land was divided up today, but they were not able to give me the names of the present day owners. This doesn't mean that they couldn't be of help to you. I wouldn't hesitate to give them a try. The courthouse is just across the street from the library.
