It turns out that my great great grandmother was named Carmelia Hampton (according to the 1920 Census, she was born around 1881 in Kemper, MS, listed as a "mulatto" and has four children: Shular Jack, Gladis Jack, Virbest Jack and Bettie Jack). I have a photo album that my grandmother gave me and it is full of photos from the early 1900's with numerous people with the last name of "Hampton" and "Jack." Many of the photos say are taken in Kemper, MS or Blytheville, Arkansas or at some school called the Mary Holmes Seminary in West Point, MS (and many of the folks look white).
