Jessie, born about 1889, I believe is the son of Moses & Alice ? Shumate. In 1910, Jessie is living with a brother Linsie next door to Moses Shumate.. Name is spelled Shoemate & Shumate in various census records. Jessie married Ophelia McConnell, and had a number of children. I am not able to find this family in the 1930 census either. Would like to correspond with anyone who can help with the Shumate Or McConnell ancestry. Any assistance will be appreciated! Scott Merrell - a direct descendant of John T. and Hibernia MERRELL. The story is, for the most part, true - as tragic and surreal as it may be. The details have not been discussed much in my family as it is a source of great regret and shame. I will try to find out more about the circumstances surrounding her death as I would like to know as well. I do know this, he was arrested and then committed to a state mental facility in Meridian, MS. It was rumored that he suffered from paranoia and/or schizophrenia. However, he didn't pass away (to my knowledge) until the early 70s. My grandmother, wife to Walter Clyde Merrell, is 92 and still living in the Jones County area. I will try to discuss this with her in depth the next time I see her. I am interested in knowing if Edward Hughston Shumate was her father and who his wife was... I know nothing of the Shumate family of which I came. I'd love to know more about the Shumates if you can help me. Thanks a! nd God bless...
