John, I just made my first trip to Kemper County this past Monday and Tuesday. The library in DeKalb does have a pretty good genealogy section considering that their courthouse burned in 1881 with a complete loss of records. One thing that they do have is an extensive file on cemetery listings. The library staff was very friendly and as helpful as they could be. I don't remember his name, but there is one young man who knows a lot about the history of Kemper County and may be able to steer you in the right direction. He works half days and comes in at 12:00 noon. As for the courthouse, they were not much use to me. About the only thing that I was able to get from them was a copy of the latest map of the section where my ancestor owned most of his land. It showed how the land was divided up today, but they were not able to give me the names of the present day owners. This doesn't mean that they couldn't be of help to you. I wouldn't hesitate to give them a try. The courthouse is just across the street from the library. Marleen, Thanks for the infomation. Just my luck that the missing link in my Brown genealogy moves to a black hole. LOL I have been in hopes that since Albert Brown was a doctor he would have left more of a record. I do want to add that although I was disappointed in the Kemper holdings as well as some to the other county book holdings, I found the staff at the Archives to have been some of the more friendly and helpful that I have worked with. There were three of us in a group from our Autauga Genealogical Society in Alabama and we all were impressed with how friendly and helpful the staff at the Archives were. I guess either we were lucky or you visited on an off day. I just returned from a research trip to the Mississippi Archives in Jackson and was very disappointed in the books available for Kemper County. They only had one or two books on Kemper and no early microfilm on Kemper. Does anyone know if the county library and courthouse in Kemper would be the best place to research? I am looking for information on my Edmond and Albert Brown who were in Kemper by 1847. John -- John K. Brown [email protected] "Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense."
John, I visited the Mississippi Archives last year, and was also extremely disappointed. I felt they actually resented that I dared to enter their door. As to information on Kemper County, there is very little available. The courthouse burned three time before 1915. Most of the information available can be found on the Kemper County GenWeb site. There are federal censuses, state censuses before 1850, tax lists and land rolls. There are no land records, such as deed, leases or mortgages. There are no birth, marriage or death records. There are 124 affidavits attesting to marriages for CW widows. Kemper County is one of the genealogical black holes. Marleen Van Horne

I have no dates or town or anything. Mary was married to Henry Bell Key on Aug 12, 1877 in Lauderdale, MS. then they moved at some point to York, Al. If anyone has any information on who Mary's parents might be I would appreciate it. I don't recall if it was Tuscaloosa AL, or Kemper County MS, but one name comes to mind: something like Burwell POPE. Richard
Is anyone on the list researching a man with the initials B. H. P. The last name is unreadable. He lived in Kemper County in the 1850s. It is the last name I am looking for. Marleen Van Horne

It seems as if I remember a post regarding the Windham/Wyndham family of Kemper County. Is there a Windham researcher on this list? I am searching for information on Edward Earnest Windham b. 1860 MS. His death certificate states that he was b. Kemper County. It says his father was James S. Windham and his mother was Polle. Ed also had a sister named Lottie who was a few years older, but there is no death certificate for her. I have no idea where I got the information, but I have Samuel Windham for their father and Polle Unknown as the mother. I can't find any census in 1860 or 1870 where any of these folks are mentioned. Can anyone help? Barbara King
