Well I am not sure if there is a connection but I am descendant from Burtons who at one time resided in Kemper County.? I will have to go back and review my information but will keep your info on file.? My Burton ancestor was James Polk Burton. He was born in North Carolina?in?1843.? When he was five years old he, his mother and sister were sold at auction.? He and his sister were sold to two Burton brothers in Kemper county.? When slavery ended, he found his sister and carried her on his back from Kemper County to Meridian looking for?their mother but they never found where or who she was sold to.? He eventually married Mary Ellen Shumate and they lived in Meridian.? They had nine children. ?I am a descendant of their daughter Annie Burton.? However, before he married Mary Ellen he was married to another woman and had three children with her.? I am told the children were named James, John and Savannah.???We have been unable to find the descendants of those three children.? ! If we are not connected to your Burtons by blood then we are probably connected by plantation.?I will keep your info in mind as I continue?my research. It is located west of Hwy. 45 approx. 5-6 miles from Porterville or 9-10 miles SE of DeKalb. I haven't been there, but I found it in the Mississippi Atlas & Gazetter published by DeLorme Map Co. If anyone has requested a look-up in the Kemper County Cemetery Index in the last couple of months, and I did not respond, please make your request to me at [email protected] The Cemetery Index was being held hostage by my old computer, I managed to liberate it today. Just so you understand how this works, the index is for the cemeteries listed on the USGenWeb Kemper County website. You tell me the surnameyou are interested in and I will send a list of where people with that surname are buried. You then can go to the cemetery on the Kemper site, and find out what was on the tombstone. Please make all requests to me at the address above and I will reply to your address. Marleen Van Horne
I have been told the courthouse burned down three times before 1915. I know there are almost no records from before about 1880, and only fragmentary records between 1880 and 1915. Does anyone know in exactly what years the courthouse actually burned down? Marleen Van Horne

What other resources does the Meridian Library have on Kemper? I have been thinking of traveling to Kemper sometime for research and Meridian would be close enough to hit both places.
