It was also the junction with the Sanoody Valley Railroad, later the DeKalb & Western RR. Never was much there. The railroad had a depot there. A 1907 Dun & Bradstreet mercantile list says it had a population of 150 and had the following businesses: Jacob Jonas- general store; Neville-Knight Lumber Co- sawmill; C T Rush- general store & mill; W D Watson- general store. A 1927 listing shows population of 80 and only one general store owned by S. M. Jones. Tony Howe Hattiesburg, MS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My GGF, George Wade King, told WPA group his closest relative, George King, lived there. I would love to know anything about the history of it. Is it or was it close to Lauderdale Springs, MS? What is the Township, Section and Range? I have been to the Sucarnochee River and have a couple of pictures of it and the scary bridge. My ancestor, Robert Hodges and his sons, Allen and James, operated a ferry across the River before 1843 when Robert and James got sick probably with malaria and died there. The reason I say malaria is I have a copy of the prescription for Allen's medicine and my Doctor says Quinine was used for malaria. Please share anything you have! Are there any books for sale? I am planning to build models of these areas (and Shuqualak, Macon, and Crawford) circa 1930's-1950's but it is difficult to find old photos of how these areas looked in that time period. I also plan to build models of the depots and areas around the train stations. Tony Howe Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Most weren't documented in any way, as they were usually temporary. My website at msrailroads dot com has histories and photos of many of the lumber companies with a focus on logging railroads in Mississippi. I still have lots more to add, but never enough time to work on it! Tony Howe Hattiesburg MS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm trying to find anything else about William when he lived in Mississippi as a young man. His mother was named Harriet Banks she lived in Kemper county also I think in Porterville. William was mullato, his father was William Davenport who lived in Porterville, Kemper County also. I haven't been able to find a birth record for William. no information about his mother either. One time i heard that he might have been born in Meridian but haven't found any truth to that either. I'm grateful for any information. Or where i can write to for information. I'd like to make a trip to Mississippi but I'm not sure where to go to look up the records. any help with this would be appreciated as well. thank you Shap Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
