(Jefferson is 150 miles from Grenada Co.) Penny isn't among his 30 slaves. My ancestor died before the Civil War and his widow remarried Dr. Brown. At Emancipation the former slaves got the surname Brown, or at least some did. The main white Liddell family in the South started from South Carolina. Since they aren't my people I don't know a lot about them, but they were very wealthy, owned many plantations and many slaves. Moses and Andrew Liddell led the SC bunch, and those names repeat in every generation. His sons and grandsons moved west. One branch, including Confederate Colonel Philip F. Liddell, settled in MS. Another branch, including Confederate General St. John R. Liddell, settled in Louisiana and Arkansas just across the Mississippi River. After Emancipation most former slaves stayed around home. Grenada County would be a good place to start. (Grenada County was created in 1870 from parts of Carroll, Choctow, Tallahatchie and Yalobusha Counties.) Confederate Lieutenant C. J. Liddell signed up in Grenada MS. He's also listed as C. T. Liddell and J. C. Liddell. This man, or his family, may have a connection with yours. I'll be glad to discuss this further with you. Please write me at the email address below. Good luck with your search! Bruce Bruce D. Liddell Birmingham AL Email BDLiddell@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
