Thanks, Nancy. I had sent a query on Bushnell, Gordon, and Hagan, and got a few scattered bits of info, which really peaked my appetite, and truly appreciated those who took time to do some research for me. My Bushnells and Gordons came thru MS, thus my interest. Below is a response I sent to George Lewis, who suggested sources I might use to seek info in my search. I will re-post my message later. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ethel Sacker" <paulsacker@centurytel.net> To: <GRlew@aol.com> Sent: Friday, August 01, 2003 2:31 PM Subject: Re: Bushnell, Gordon, Hagen > Thank you for your response. Enough, already! Let it go! There is enough turmoil in the world as is. Neither one if you is proving anything; just creating dissention on this great website. Be nice, fellows. PEACE. Ethel (a new subscriber).
Liddell has done us all a disservice by keeping a peek at the past from us by "trashing" Mr. Mickell. Eddie, hang in there and don't let this get you down. CDS
Open letter to all subscribers. My apologies for airing dirty laundry. My complaint dealt only with the Jefferson County MSGenWeb site. I do not know why Mr. Mikell copied it to Attalla, Jefferson Davis, Lawrence, and Lincoln counties. Nor do I understand his withdrawal. Open letter in response to Mr. Mikell. Mikell >> I will have to say, Mr. Liddell's note has been shocking. I do not know, Bruce, if you are aware that everything I have transcribed has been released to the mailing list, some 1000 pages, so if you have the time, you could search the archives and find everything I have type there for the last seven years. The ONLY thing that I could not post was the pictures, which the mailing list will not handle mime type submissions. You have "decompiled" the material in order to make money. You started with a single collection of source material and deliberately broke it into many small fragments, each with instructions to purchase the whole from you. Do you know for certain that this business method is legal is all 50 states, Mr. Mikell? I am trained as an historian. 1000 pages do not impress me. Nor am I impressed by the many errors. Do you have a spell-checker, Mr. Mikell? Mikell >> I posted the material to alternate mailing groups, after first contacting the list administrator to make sure it was ok, in the hopes that someone could connect their relatives with others in nearby counties. If I wanted to receive material on another MS county, I would subscribe to that mailing list. Your Lawrence information was not appropriate for Jefferson. Did you explain to the volunteer list administrators that every message would include, at the top, the instructions "E-mail mikell@virginia.edu for purchasing information"? Mikell >> I do not sell Genealogy material, nor is this a business of mine. This seems to contradict your statement "E-mail mikell@virginia.edu for purchasing information" at the top of every transcription page, which I interpret as direct sales. Perhaps by Clintonian wordplay you "do not sell Genealogy material." But that seems to contradict your statement of 31-Jul-2003 "occasionals sales and the few dollars it brings in is sort of what keeps the project alive, as far as transcribing to the internet." Do you accept credit cards, Mr. Mikell? Mikell >> I compiled the material in one place as to make it easy for people to search. No, as mentioned above, you have "decompiled" the material to make it difficult to search, easy to buy. Mikell >> I have followed the mailing list for some time, and not to bring undue attention, but outside of the work that I have posted, I rarely, if ever, see any original material on any of the groups. Most of us prefer that the administrator post our stuff online, then include it in monthly "What's new" mailings, instead of filling every mailbox with our unwanted data. Mikell >> Good bye all. The material I have transcribed is still "out there", and you can find it if you surf. The rest of the some 400 pages of the Bethany Church Records will have to wait for some other sap to ruin his eyesight over ;-], and Mr. Liddell can finish the rest of the some 300 pages of the newspaper.. I do not understand this action. My complaint dealt only with the Jefferson County MSGenWeb site. I do not know why this should affect other counties. Nor do I understand why Mr. Mikell should withdraw from anything. As one alert subscriber pointed out, mine is the only public complaint. I wonder if Proverbs 28:1 applies here. Yes, I will be glad to transcribe the remaining Bethany and Lawrence newspaper records, and post the compilation on the Lawrence website. Please ship them prepaid to my snail-mail address below. When I'm done I'll ship them back to you at my expense. Please spell my name, address, and nine-digit ZIP correctly to avoid misdelivery. I will respond to each individual who has emailed me, but please give me time. Apparently a great many of you consider me a dirty dog. Bruce D. Eddie > Open letter to the MSJEFFER-L mailing list administrator. > > I agree 100% with your policy of "no advertising." In my opinion, Mr. Eddie Mikell is misusing the mailing list. To me, his frequent mailings look like nothing more than teasers for selling genealogy CDs. This is unsolicited commercial email, commonly called "spam." Mr. Mikell's statement that sales defray production costs confirms his business intentions. I fail to see the connection between Jefferson County, the focus of this website and home of my ancestors, and Lawrence County. Perhaps Mr. Mikell could set up his own website, as other businesses do. Alternatively, perhaps Mr. Mikell could submit his material for posting on the appropriate website without charge, as I and many others have done. > > You have my unqualified support in keeping commercial operations off the Jefferson County mailing list. > > Bruce D. Sounds like the list Administrator is a little jealous. My vote is to allow the newspaper to be published. Your articles are very popular, don't give up. John
Eddie, You are doing a tremendous favor to countless people by transcribing the early records of Lawrence Co. Please don't stop! The list administrator should rethink her position on this matter. Sharron
All: I am a little distressed over a recent "polite" note from one of the mailing list administrators, so that is the reason I have not sent out anything as of late. Seems the policy is that I cannot "advertise" and I understand that, so the reference to the E-bay note is not allowed. I do not mind, and want to follow policy, but occasionals sales and the few dollars it brings in is sort of what keeps the project alive, as far as transcribing to the internet.... Any suggestions, or comments are welcome at this point. Thanks for you understanding.. Eddie

What's New July 31, 2003 - Added Buell Tavern (later known as Truly Tavern) - contributed by Charles Dawkins from a file he found in the MDAH WPA records for Jefferson County. Really interesting! Ann Researching Jefferson & Franklin County, MS I wasn't born in MS but I got here as quick as I could! The things that come to those that wait may be the things left by those who got there first!

Would anyone know where "12 Mile Swamp" was located in Spanish West Florida about 1799-1803? And is it still known as such, or changed names? I am trying to find out where it might be located today, or in that period. I found a copy of a Spanish Land Grant (Spanish West Florida)for Eusebius Bushnell--says he was in possession of 600 acres in 12 Mile Swamp in year 1803. Sure would appreciate help on this. Thank you. Ethel.
Have you seen Scott Buie's book, "From Scotland to North America, the Family Buie"? The synopsis that quite a few Buies left the Island of Jura (off the coast of Scotland) in the 1720 and landed in North Carolina. From there, the famlies have spread through Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. My ancestor Mary Jane Buie was born in Catahoula Parish, La. Eventually she arrived in Upshur County, Texas. Her third husband was A. Smith Kilgore. Their only offspring was Mary Alicia Kilgore who is my great grandmother.
