Hi, E. P. I sent you an email re the Dennis Cross Roads ... Who are you looking for. Red Lick and the Cross roads are my neighborhood. Ann Brown
Linda .. Comforts didnt exactly live on the corner. Their property ended on that corner. The property directly across from the Stephens house was also owned by Daniel .. later Ruth Starnes and her husband built a house there and had a little store. The fourth corner ... well, I will have to research that. Ann Brown

If any one cdan answer these questions please put them in a letter to all of us interested in Jefferson Co. Ms
Cherylb425@aol.com cc MSJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com Hi Cheryl - Sorry I can't help you, but I can tell you where NOT to look. My ancestor was the only Liddell slaveowner in Jefferson County MS. (Jefferson is 150 miles from Grenada Co.) Penny isn't among his 30 slaves. My ancestor died before the Civil War and his widow remarried Dr. Brown. At Emancipation the former slaves got the surname Brown, or at least some did. The main white Liddell family in the South started from South Carolina. Since they aren't my people I don't know a lot about them, but they were very wealthy, owned many plantations and many slaves. Moses and Andrew Liddell led the SC bunch, and those names repeat in every generation. His sons and grandsons moved west. One branch, including Confederate Colonel Philip F. Liddell, settled in MS. Another branch, including Confederate General St. John R. Liddell, settled in Louisiana and Arkansas just across the Mississippi River. After Emancipation most former slaves stayed around home. Grenada County would be a good place to start. (Grenada County was created in 1870 from parts of Carroll, Choctow, Tallahatchie and Yalobusha Counties.) Confederate Lieutenant C. J. Liddell signed up in Grenada MS. He's also listed as C. T. Liddell and J. C. Liddell. This man, or his family, may have a connection with yours. I'll be glad to discuss this further with you. Please write me at the email address below. Good luck with your search! Bruce Bruce D. Liddell Birmingham AL Email BDLiddell@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Linda, The Comfort/Stephens connection is John K. Comfort (4 Jul 1824 KY/11 Nov 1898 Jefferson Co., MS) m. 24 Mar 1858 in Jefferson Co., MS, Rebecca Ann Stephens (25 Apr 1841 JC/7 Jul 1927 JC). Tony
Ann, Do you know who lived at all four of the Dennis Crossroads corners? I know the Starnes/Stephens lived at one corner. If the Comforts lived at one of the other corners, were there family homes at the other two? Where were the Comforts in relation to the Starnes? There is a Comfort/Stephens connection, but I can't remember exactly where. Linda Grafton __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Annie G As the grandson to email me directly with more details and I will do the search for him when I go to the courthouse this next week. Ann B.
First, let me get the "court house burned .... and records lost" corrected. The court house did burn. The Chancery Clerk's office was in a building separate from the court house ... no records were lost in there due to the fire. In the court house, the offices were Circuit Clerk, Tax Assessor's office, Board of Education, Lots of old Justice Court Records stored in the balcony. Just about all of the Circuit Clerk's records were saved .... Do you have a clue of what the male's name was, or a little better date than just 1930? That is so vague. Remember, getting in trouble could be anything from getting a girl pregnant to murder. Ann Brown
The Comforts lived closer to Red Lick. Actually at the Dennis Cross Roads. Yes, One of the ladies was called "Sis" . I live about a mile and half from the old Comfort place. It is now a pine forest. They harvested a couple years ago and now most of it is new growth. About the Smith's. That is a common name in this part of Jefferson County. How many children did John and Mary have and what are their names? They must have went to school at Red Lick. There are still some old timers around here that might remember them How long did they live in this are? I need just a little more information ... are were they in the black or white community?. Ann Brown
They were black. Dr. Stanton tells me the family were sharecroppers for the Comforts I located them on the 1930 Census. Apparently there were some troubles with one of the boys and the grandson is trying to find more out about the family. Ann, do you know if any of the newspaper records are still in the courthouse or did they burn? Hi folks, I am passing this on to the list in case anyone knows anything about these folks! I thanked him very much for the kind words! This makes it all worth while! "Good day to you I would like to start by introducing myself. I am Lee Stanton and have been looking for info regarding my mothers family. After much digging I ran across your page and I must say it is the best page I have ever seen. You give a wealth of information and it is easy extremely user friendly. I am a professor at Colby collage in Waterville, Maine in computer SCI (Multimedia) I will be using your page as a good example of a web page. My mother's family were share croppers in Harriston, Mississippi (Jefferson co.) back in the 20's and I believe most of the 30's. I was told the owner of the property was Comfort the first name may have been Sis or that could have been a nick name. Is there any way of getting share crop information for that time? From what I have been told my Uncles got into some kind of trouble but that may have been a roomer. the last name I am looking for is any info on Smith (John, Marry) John Smith would have been born around 1900 give or take a year or two Marry Smith was born Feb 10 1900 or 1901. Please let me know of any agencies that could be of help. Thank you so much and it will be a pleasure to hear back from you.
