Well, Leonard Herring, from KY, was listed as a passenger on a boat to Natchez, 12-14 March 1790. A Thomas Herring was listed in the 1805 Census for Franklin County with one male over 21, one male under 21 and three females. A William Herren was listed in the 1810 Franklin County Census with one male over 21, four males under 21, one female over 21 and two females under 21. A Stephen Herrin was listed in the 1810 Jefferson County Census with one male over 21, two males under 21, no females over 21 and three females under 21. A Stephen Herring (Card # 3895-2468-2535-2590) was a Pvt. in Capt. Robert Twilley's Company of MST Militia, as part of Lt. Col. George H. Nixon's Regiment, serving from 23 Oct.1813 - 28 Feb. 1814. Discharged in AL, 350 miles from home in Jefferson Co. Service was probably at Pierce's Stockade. Isaac E. Herring married Mary E. Griffing in Jefferson County on 3 Feb. 1763. J. B. Herring married C. Anna Griffing in Jefferson County on 13 April 1870. Does that help? George R. Lewis

You should contact Ben Strickland Publishing, P.O.Box 5147, Moss Point, MS 39563. His two volume set, Residents of the Mississippi Territory, Miscellaneous, Books 2A and 2B, contain many references to those names. As an example, the Spanish Census of 1792 lists Guillermo (William) Barland as having 500 acres, 12 horses, 15 cows, 60 hogs, etc., in the Districto de Santa Catalina (St. Catherine, Adams County). Also present was Juan (John) Bisland with 3450 acres, 50 horses, 100 cows, 20 sheep, 100 hogs, etc. Germain has two references, Shipp has six references, and Henderson has 32. Barland has 8 and Bisland has 12 references. As you can see, this far exceeds what we can easily cite to you. Besides, the Barland reference on page 14 of Vol. 2A, is something that might really surprise you (and others). George R. Lewis

Years ago, I drove through Jefferson Co and there was an old store on the old Highway near Red Lick. Is it still there? There were some old books in one of the back rooms that covered all the purchases at the store in the late 1800's. They contained a lot of genealogial material. What has happened to them?

List here are a few notations from a few of the Rodney church notes. The years I have are 1916-1923. They have not been transcribed and are very hard to read in places. My grandfather A.W. Duck and elder E.L. Beck are mentioned in almost every entry. Some meetings where apparently held in Mr. Beck's store. It is obvious from these notations that the church was being maintained by the older members as no children are listed in roll call. They are very clear on this point. A.W. Duck apparently preached at Rodney two times a month and spent other Sundays at Red Lick and Hermanville. By the time he left Rodney in 1923 they where down to 16 members. The last mention of a child from the notes I have (mine are not complete) is on Sept. 24, 1916-"at the close of service Mrs. and Mr. John L. Schi****es presented their infant daughter Marie Louise for baptism." (Tough call on names on my part). Sept 28, 1919-"Mr. PhilipGaetano came before the session professing his faith in Christ and after baptism was received into the Church." Note: Mr. Gaetano also became a member at this time. April 27, 1919-"Elders Jno W. Broughton and E.L. Beck were present. The congregation having elected Mr. Walter B Berniss and Mr. Chas. F Heckler to the office of deacon." Nov 30, 1919-"Miss Dola Walters presented herself for church membership, after examination as to her faith in Christ was received and baptized. Also Mr. Geo Noland Galtney Jr. and Mrs. Geo Noland Galtney presented themselves for church membership". Note: they where baptized and received as well. Jan 2?, 1920-"Miss Katie Hurley presented a letter from Fayette Presbyterian Church and was received into the Rodney Church". March 28, 1920-"Mrs. Lottie Paul presented a letter from the Methodist Church of Rodney and expressed her desire to become a member of the Presbyterian Church and was received." May 23, 1920-"Miss Katyline Berniss was dismissed to unite with the Presbyterian Church of Shreveport, La." Jan 22 1922'"Mrs. Katie H. O Quinn asked to unite with the church at Fayette". Jan 22, 1922" Mr. Chas. Heckler made request for letter dismissing him to unite with the church at St. Joseph, La." June 25, 1922-"Anette Limerian* Holder and Philip Gaetano was dismissed to 1st Church Jackson Miss and Philip Gaetano to Port Gibson." Sept 24, 1922-"Mrs Carrie S Hurley asked for a letter dismissing her to Fayette Church". March 25, 1923-"Mrs. Nonie Paul Monroe made request for a letter dismissing her to 1st Church Baton Rouge, Louise". May 7, 1923-"Rev. A.W. Duck presented request for congregational meeting to be called to ** on his resignation as pastor". May 27, 1923-"Mr. J.E. Paul came forward professing his faith in Christ and was received. Mrs Hattie Lily made request for letter of dismissial to Tupelo Presbyterian Church." Note: I have may not be correct in exact spellings on the names..................... Martin Hackler Took an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America from Cato West in December 1798 in the Jefferson County area. In the 1805 Jefferson County Census, Christian Hackler had four males over 21, one male under 21 and three females. In the 1810 Jefferson County Census, four males over 21, two males under 21 and three females under 21. In a court case in 1821: "Hackler's Heirs vsLewis Cabel Martin Hackler settled on land in what is now Jefferson County in 1797 and died the 6th of December 1803. His widow who was the guardian of minors Charlotte May, Samuel, Anna, Maria, Jacob and Ester Hackler later married Lewis Cabel. This case involves the land of Martin Hackler. December Term 1821." I have been searching for the answer to this puzzle for years ... Can anyone please help me? Harriett Elizabeth Latham born 29 July 1845 married James Kelly Brown Harriett's parents were James Latham .. born in England 27 Jan 1803 .. died 26 Feb 1867. Is buried in the cemetery at Christ Episcopal Church in Church Hill, Mississippi. He married NANCY SMITH. at Christ Church on 6 May 1839. The church records list her as ANNA SMITH. Harriet's mother died when she was a young girl and her father went back to England and remarried. This time to his brother's widow, Allison K. Latham. It is my understanding that Dr. N.C. Latham was his brother. When James returned to the USA he brought Allison's family with him. Those children are about the same age as his children with NANCY SMITH LATHAM. This makes for some confusing date ... his .. hers... and theirs. Some how Rachael Smith who married James Scriber is kin to Nancy. Rachel and a Nancy are listed in Catharine Smith's will ...Adams Co., Will/Probate page 10-11. The will was dated 27 Feb 1803 and probated 6 Nov 1803. It lists the daughters as Hannah, Rachael, Elizabeth, Margaret and Nancy .. and a son Martin. This leads me to believe that Nancy was the youngest ..IS THIS MY NANCY ? ?. Who know anything about Martin Smith and Wife Catherine ??? Rachael married James H. Scriber on 3 Sep 1829 Nancy married James Latham 5 May 1839 Any and All information glady shared. I have a small date book with additional information of the Lathams .... and McFarlands. Harriett was left in the USA when James went back to England. I believe she must have stayed with Rachel .. and was fond of them. She named her oldest son, James Scriber Brown (who was my husband's grandfather) Ann Brown
