I have found a good site to search for Jefferson County material and people. It is a part of the online material found in the Library of Congress. For example, you can use the search engine on this page with words such as "Rodney Mississippi" or "Mississippi territory"or names of people such as "Thomas Rodney", but be sure to use quotes for phrases. There are a lot of old pictures here of Rodney in the depression era. Also, the names of a number of the men important in the early MS territory days are found in the papers of Thomas Jefferson, online here. One interesting story I found was the murder of Dr. Jeremiah Chamberlain in Rodney, as recorded in the Port Gibson Correspondant in 1851. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html
I am seeking information on Uriah Samuel Humphreys, born 1833, the son of Jonathan Humphreys and Lydia Woolley, Uriah served in the 19th Mississippi Inf. He married Matilda Rogillio Trevillion in 1866? in Jefferson County. She was the widow of Phillip Barnes Trevillion and the daughter of John Rogillio and Elizabeth Smith of Jefferson Co. Any inf. on the Humphreys family would be appreciated. I do not know when Uriah died but he and Matilda are buried at Trevillion Cemetery in Blue Hill Ms. as well as many other family members. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Jefferson/430 Surname: Arnold, Dixon, Baker ------------------------- I am searching for Thomas Bluitt (Blewett) Arnold who according to the 1860 Census lived in Jefferson County with his wife, Mary Dixon Arnold and 3 children. He left Jefferson County and came to Amite and Franklin Counties and had several more children and then according to family story, Thomas left his wife Mary with all these children around 1882 and came back to Jefferson County where he married again and had at least one (if not more) children. We also heard that he caught fire while in Jefferson County and we don't know if that was the cause of his death or not, as I do not have an actual death date or burial place. If anyone could help me, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Peggy
Posted on: Jefferson Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Jefferson/429 Surname: Ludlow, Neel, Pace ------------------------- Thanks for answering. I found the Ludlows and Neels in Polk, Tyler and Jasper Counties and have been trying to get them placed with the right families. I accidently found the Neels on a web site of old Mississippi records. That's where I found the idea that Lanier W. md the widow of C.C. Neel. In Hickory Grove Cemetery in Tyler County there is a Culbertson C. Neel (1818-1907) buried next to Sarah Ludlow Neel (1826-1892)...evidently his wife? Do you have any idea who this Sarah is? When you find one of these families, you will probably find the other living nearby. James B. Pace, who married Sarah Ann Ludlow Johnson was a brother of my husbands great-grandfather, Eli Pace. They were the sons of Hardy and Mahalla (Isaacks)Pace, early settlers of Jasper Co., TX. This Hardy was also the step-son of my ggggrandfather, Thomas Watts, SR. Sarah and James B. had 2 children, Hardy M. Pace and Frances Pace who md. Isom Ard. Rena Pace who is buried with the others at Ebeneazer Cem. in Jasper Co. is Sarah's daughter, but not the dayghter of James B. She was born in 1873 and James died during the War between the States. I live in Jasper and if there is anything I can look up for you let me know.
may I ask how did you find the records, thanks At 04:35 PM 01/10/2001 -0800, Michelle Slabaugh wrote: >Posted on: Jefferson Co. Posted on: Jefferson Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Jefferson/428 Surname: LUDLOW, NEEL, NEAL, NEILL ------------------------- Lanear [or Linear] W. Ludlow, Sr. (b. 1815 Miss d. 1894 Texas, buried Ebenezer Cemetery, Jasper Co, TX) married Feb 18, 1837 in Madison Co, MS to Mrs. Charlotte Tidwell Neal [or Neel or Neill (b. ca 1812 Miss d. after 1860 TX). She was the dau of Fances Tidwell (b. 1780 d 1840 Madison Co, MS) & Rebecca ___ & had first married John C Neal (b. between 1794 & 1800). Lanear is on the 1840 Clarke Co, MS census, the 1840-41 Clarke Co tax rolls, the 1849 Hinds Co, MS tax roll, & the 1850 Polk Co census. I am researching Calvin M Ludlow who was somehow related to Lanear Ludlow, Sr. Calvin was born about 1800/01 in Tenn & moved with Lanear to Polk Co. TX about 1849/50. Calvin is on the 1830 Monroe Co, ALA census, the 1835-41 Clarke Co tax rolls, the 1843-48 Scott Co tax rolls, the 1850 Polk Co, TX Census, & the 1860 Tyler Co, TX census. Calvin married (1)Lucinda Hurt and (2)1846 Mary E Parker in Rankin Co, MS. His children include (1)Wm M Ludlow who went back to Miss & settled in Scott Co & after the Civil War Madison Co, MS (2)Mahala Ludlow m. J B Schofield in Texas, (3) Mary Ludlow, & (4) John A Ludlow The Ludlows were early settlers of MS. I suspect Maxfield Ludlow or John S Ludlow, both of MS, were the generation prior to Calvin & Lanear. How do you track back to Jefferson Co, MS? I have some info I've gathered on Sarah Ann Ludlow who married (1) 1856 Duncan Johnson and (2) 1860 James B Pace. Does your husband's line include Hardy M Pace (1861-1945), a son of James B. & Sarah Pace? My Ludlow line is through Calvin M Ludlow to William M Ludlow to Benjamin F. Ludlow, my g-grandfather on my mother's side. Would like to hear from you & share data.

Book M, page 8. I am trying to find out their parents names and anything else possible. Charles is said to have died when he was only 26 years old but I don't know where he died or is buried. One of the problems with trying to track the Lewis family is that there are so many people with the Lewis surname - at one time it was the ninth most common surname. None of my Lewis ancestors seem to have been in MS. You might help by giving a given name and year that you think they were in Franklin Co., where McCall Creek is. I can find no Lewis in any of the censuses I have access to - 1792 Spanish through 1850 Federal - living in Franklin Co., MS. I found a marriage of a William Lewis to Margaret Byrd in 1838, in Franklin Co., MS, on CD-ROM #5. All the other Lewis marriages in Franklin Co. were during or after 1865. There were 80 references to the Lewis surname in the two volumes I listed in the Dec. 23, 2000 response relative to Barland, Bisland. George R. Lewis
I found this on a Georgia county website. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Dear Mary .... . Thanks ... how absolutely marvelous those entries were ..... recongize a lot of those names ... mind if I use this in the quarterly? Ann Brown
Ann, I don't mind at all but how about I send you a copy of the pages I have. Please just send me your address again and I will get in the mail to you next week. You know these names better than I and you might be able to transcribe better. I also was busy and still am with kids out of school so I might have missed something. I have noticed that you are doing research on the Terrys. I was wondering if you happen to have a Henry Thomas Terry (born ca 1886), son of William John Terry and Jennifer Hill, in your family tree? Henry Thomas was in Ontario at the time of his marriage to Gertrude Evelyn Virgin in 1906. We are not too sure if he was born in Ontario, Canada. It is said that the TERRYs came from the United States, from around West Virginia. Please, if you have any information, could you please contact me. Thank you and I hope to hear from you very soon.

"Residents of the Mississippi Territory, Miscellaneous, Book 2B.", pages 230 - 233. The publisher is Ben Strickland, P. O. Box 5147, Moss Point MS 39563. The authors are Jean Strickland and Patricia N. Edwards. The set, Books 2A and 2B, are sold together. The index is in 2B. Book 2A has MST Legislative Acts, Court cases, Spanish Census of 1792, early censuses of Adams County through Jefferson County. These are not all of the Census data available. There is a set of microfilm Censuses of MST as well as Tax Rolls. Book 2B continues the Census data through Wilkinson County, 1816. Then comes misc. data such as boat passengers, American Tobacco Growers in the area of Natchez in 1790, Oaths of Allegiances in 1798 to the USA when the Spanish gave up the territory, and some land claim data and maps. These two books seem to be a handy reference for the area, particularly since the names are indexed. George R. Lewis
George, What is the source for the boat passengers from KY in 1790? Is it a book or other? Thanks for the information. I need to check out some names. Gin Hathaway
