    1. Re: [MSJEFFER-L] Ebenezer Church
    2. Ann & Mary, There is frequent mention of Ebenezer Church in the Susan Sillars Darden's diary. Susan Darden often mentions that Mr. Darden and the girls either went to church in Fayette or to Ebenezer Church In a few places she mentions the name of the preacher who was preaching at the time in the 1850s and 1860s. In the late 1800s and well into the last century (until he died in 1934) it is highly probably that Rev. C. W. Grafton, who had the Union Church Presbyterian Church, also preached from time to time at both the Ebenezer and the Oldenburg Presbyterian Churches. Rev. Grafton baptised one of my cousins at the Oldenburg church in 1920. The Bellhaven College in Jackson, MS may have information on Ebenezer Church. I found a book of records on the Union Church Presbyterian Church printed in Richmond, VA in the 1930s in the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City in 1991. This was a real surpise. I think there was supposed to have been a cemetery at the Ebenezer Church, but I fdon't find it in Ann Brown's wonderful books. Tony Miller in Calabasas, CA

    3. Ann, I copied this from a website recently, I don't know if it will be helpful, but it includes the address of another source for records, in addition to the Presbyterian archives at Montreat. "The formation of the Presbyterian church in 1800 is attributed to three missionaries: James Hall, William Montgomery, and James Bowman who were sent by the Synod of the Carolinas to preach. The first established Presbyterian church in Mississippi was Bethel at Uniontown in Jefferson County. The Synod of Mississippi was formed in 1835. For information on the synod, see Walter B. Posey, The Presbyterian Church in the Old Southwest, 1778-1838 (Richmond, Va.: John Knox Press, 1952), and "Documentary Material Relating to the Early History of the Presbyterian Church in Mississippi," Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society 21 (December 1943): 196-200. Some historical records may be found in the Belhaven College, Hood Library, 1500 Peachtree Street, Jackson, Mississippi 39202. There are no restrictions on the use of the materials. Other records may be located through the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches, Assembly Drive, Box 847, Montreat, North Carolina 28757." 3. Ann, From "The Mississippi Historical Society, Volume X, pages 203-221" is mention of a Rev. Jacob Rickhow as the third Presbyterian minister who permanently settled in the Territory. He came to Natchez in 1810 and the began preaching in the eastern part of Jefferson County in 1811, this is where he started Ebenezer Church. When you contact Presbyterian Historical Society in Montreat, N.C. you might want to also ask if there is anymore information on him as perhaps there was some members lists in some writings about this man. Ebenezer was apparently the seventh Presbyterian church and was located in what was called the Scotch Settlement. Names mentioned in connection to Ebenezer from the above sited work where as follows: Dougal Torrey, Daniel Cameron, Lockland Currie, Robert Willis, George Torrey. Several of these families from the original Ebenezer congregation formed the eighth Presbyterian church which was Union church. You might want to see what records are available on Union church as well since these churches may have had committee meetings or sent members together to a Synod meeting, etc.. Don't rule out other churches in the area as often families belonged to more than one. Mark, In 1820: William MONTGOMERY: 3 males under 10; 4 males of 10, under 16; 1 male of 26, under 45; 1 female of 16, under 25; 1 female of 26, under 45; 3 persons involved in agriculture; 2 male slaves, under 14; 3 male slaves, of 26, under 45; 1 female slave, of 26, under 45 In 1830: William MONTGOMERY; 1 male under 5; 2 males of 5, under 10; 1 male of 15, under 20; 1 male of 50, under 60; 2 females of 5, under 10; 1 female of 20, under 30; 1 female of 40, under 50 There are several MONTGOMERYS in 1820, but I can't read any of their first names, unfortunately, the pages they're on are very dark. I looked for Rev. Montgomery's widow (I couldn't remember if she'd outlived him) in 1850, but didn't find her. 1850 was the first census to ask for place of birth. Rev. Montgomery was from Georgia, and his wife from Wilkes Co., GA (according to Ann Brown's "Jeff. Co., MS Cemeteries, Etc., Vol. II").....do you think he was probably from that county as well?
