First, I think it's great that you brought the subject up for discussion and I understand you being concerned. It's sad that we even have to think about such things isn't it? Here are my thoughts. Posting a Social Security Number online is no different than posting a person's name online - living or deceased. Anyone can make up a name or a SS#, and anyone with internet access can use the SSDI to obtain SS#'s. There are many other ways to obtain current SS#'s as well. Most of the identity theft type crimes are from living persons, and it takes a lot more than a name and SS#. A SS# and name will get you nowhere. It would take, at the very least, a SS#, name, bank account (with money in it), preprinted checks, phone number, and a current employer. I don't see a problem is posting the SS#'s, in fact I think it will help others that are doing genealogy research. There are a lot of easier places for criminals to get their information, for instance, your local grocery store, gas station and bank. Genealogy message lists and forums are no better to them than making it up on their own. Wayne
