    3. Hello everyone, If you haven't heard of the author, Elmo Howell, I would like to introduce you to him. I saw an article about his books in a recent issue of The Itawamba County Times and found out he lived in Memphis. I called him and talked to him, and found a new friend. Mr. Howell was born in 1918 and lived most of his life in the Mt. Pleasant Community in Itawamba County. I have only purchased his new book, called "Mt. Pleasant" but plan to purchase his other three books on Mississippi. "Mt. Pleasant" is a book of poems and writings about the people of the Mt. Pleasant Community. He has even drawn a map in the book of the community and the people living there during the 1920's and 1930's. This book is poetry, and it brought back many great memories of Itawamba County for me. Here is an excerpt from the book: The Map "Mt. Pleasant began a long time ago, I don't believe anybody knows when - But I remember the old church and a graveyard half as big, with little trellised houses, cedar trees, and rock tombstones. We were a little country of our own back then, and the church with the store at the foot of the hill was the capital. We pretty much kept to ourselves. I spend a lot of time now getting about on my map -- stopping off at houses, with old faces coming to the door, old dogs barking. I like these people. I like to hear them talk about life -- what they were up to and how they took the weather; And that's what my poems are about." I asked him if he would allow me to put a couple of his poems on the internet, and he was happy to grant me permission. If you are interested in any of his books, he can be contacted at: Elmo Howell 3733 Douglass Avenue Memphis, TN 3811 901.323.5914 Books are titled: Mississippi Home Places - $14.95, Mississippi Scenes - $16.95, Mississippi Back Roads - 19.95, Mt. 3. Thank you so much for letting us all know about this. It is wonderful! Can you tell me where Mt. Pleasant is? My folks were in the New Salem Community.
