    1. [MSITAWAM-L] Re: 1930 Article
    2. I have a copy of an article transcribed from the Fulton News Beacon May 8 1930, titled Historical Notes. This was printed in the Itawamba Settlers, Vol. V11 No 1, March 1987. The article is as follows: During the Civil War, some citizens were making a drive for deer. MR GEORGE SARTOR, SR., was on a stand near the spot where the Fairview School building now stands. A company of Tories came down the Eastport Road. Seeing the old man standing by a tree with his gun, without a word, shot him down. I think the same raid went on to MR ELIJAH SPEARMAN'S , robbed the house and fed their stock. Old man TOM BILLINGSLY, who lived, before the War, where MR SIDNEY WRIGHT now lives, on the old Russelville and Cotton Gin Road, he seemed to be the leader of the raid. He stepped up on the steps at SPEARMAN'S and said, "MRS . SPEARMAN, can I come in?" She gritted her teeth in his face and said, "You have got the power, sir." He then walked in. The widow CUMMINGS saved her husband's watch by dropping it behind a ceiling board. They searched for SPEARMAN'S money, going into the garden and digging around. Every now and then would hollow out, "here it is." BILLINGSLY was killed just after the surrender on the South side of Bull Mountain bottom near whee MR OSCAR LOCKBRIDGE now lives. GEORGE W SARTOR, JR., was killed in action in Gen. Bragg's army during the Civil War. He had three children. Two girls and one boy. In 1874 they were all married at home, by Rev J FBenson, near Halltown, Alabama under the same ceremony. JACK RABURN married MARY: ROBERT F LEE married JANE, and BILLIE married JENNETT CLEVELAND. If anyone has any information on any of the people listed in this article, please let me know. The Sartors and the Rev Benson are my people, and I need more information. I would like to know where their home was near Halltown, plus anything anyone can share. Could anyone be kind enough to get a copy of the 1850 and 1860 and 1870 census for Halltown showing these Sartors? Thank you. Jen'ee
