    3. It's okay to post the recent obituaries. They are public information. Don Pate posts many of them on the Itawamba message board currently. We need to get everything posted, recent and old, obituaries, reunions, anything that would be of interest to genealogy. >Is it okay to post recent obituaries from the local paper? <

    3. Most of the Rootsweb sponsored obituary sites have a disclaimer that permission of the newspaper in which the obituary appeared must be obtained before posting it. I searched several online newspapers that post obituaries to see if they tended to claim copyright on them (since they are usually compiled by the funeral home with the assistance of survivors). Most have a copyright notice on that page. Some also have a disclaimer that their permission must be obtained before copying. That would extend to copying on listservs, web sites, etc. I think it would be much safer to call the Daily Journal and receive a blanket permission before doing any widespread obituary posting. You could get a blanket permission from the Itawamba County paper(s). If you obtain this (preferably in writing), you are assured you are not in copyright violation. By the way, the Mississippi site for obituary posting at Rootsweb is in need of adoption and has no obituaries posted. This would be a great place to archive the obituaries in a more permanent place. If someone decided to undertake this, s/he could take a look at the format of some of the states that have already undertaken this.
