Cindy et al., As much as I would like to help, I can't seem to find a connection to tie in here! I would love to be able to tie your James Monroe Redden into my Redden information, but I don't seem able to do so. I have not been able to firmly tie any male Reddens into my line, but seem to have a couple of female Reddens for sure. This is what I seem to have. Please let me know if it helps or if anyone has a tie. Thanks, dave webb Husband: Thomas Redden Sr. Birth: Between 1790/1800 Place: Laurens Co., South Carolina, U.S.A. Dave Webb's item on the ex-slave narratives was interesting. He is right about the value of these records for people researching their families. A few weeks ago I was researching my family in Franklin County, Alabama. I used census records to track down the grandfather of my great grandfather-William Hugh McKinney. He was the grandson of Johnson McKinney (born 1764 in Virginia) I discovered in the separate slave schedules for 1850 and 1860 that Johnson McKinney owned 10 slaves. I also found that his sons (including my great great grandfather) fought for the Union and the Confederacy, that war really was "Brother against Brother". Anyway I found that William's maternal grandfather was a man named Hugh Nelson. While searching through online records Hugh Nelson's name turned up in some ex-slave narratives. He is described as befriending a slave family and share cropping with them, during the worst of the Klu Klux Klan times, helping the slave family and taking up for them against the Klan. The ex-slave's name was Mingo White. At first I thought that the chances of this Hugh Nelson and my Hugh Nelson being the same were not too good, but it made me dig a little deeper. There were other things in the narrative that seemed to fit...so I rechecked my census records. I found the 1870 census with my great great gr gr grandfather Hugh on it..then I looked at the family next door. They were a black family named White, and Mingo White was listed as a twelve year old. I now think that this was my ancestor mentioned in the narrative. And it was a very valuable bit of insight into the family that I am very glad I ran across. I agree with Mr. Webb about the value of these narratives and their ability to help us see a time otherwise closed to us. -Beryl Reid-
I found these at my university library today. Hadn't known about them till a friend mentioned them to me yesterday. There are more than 2000 accounts in all, across the southeast. They were made by WPA writers in the 1930's and answer a series of questions that were designed to get ex-slaves to detail their experiences as best they could. So those who they talked to were in their 80's, 90's, 100's, and at least one from Itawamba County who claimed to be 113 years old! The 17 volume work is entitled: The American Slave: A Composite Autobiography. Greenwood Press. 1972-1979. Out of the 5 volumes of Mississippi narratives, I wrote down those who were still living in the following counties: Lee/Itawamba/Monroe/Pontotoc Ex-Slave Narratives (The narratives give the county of the ex-slave's current [1930ish] residence. I did not go through and check on accounts of those who might have lived in the above mentioned counties during the war, only to move to another county after the war - this would have taken way too long!) The first number is the page numbers (and thus the length of the narrative), the second is the name of the ex-slave, the third is the county, and the fourth (if there) is the family that the ex-slave belonged to or mentions in the account. I've got the last 4 of the 5 volumes right here, so if anyone has a question about any of these save the first two, I can maybe answer them. I can't reproduce the whole things here, but maybe I can check to see if there is something that might help. 90-101 Anna Baker - Monroe 187-188 Sam Bradford - Pontotoc 412-415 Matilda Clifton - Itawamba (of the Steve Johnson family; md. a George Clifton) 592-599 Jake Dawkins - Monroe 782-792 Dora Franks - Monroe 793-800 Pet Franks - Monroe (husband of Dora) 813-814 Letha Gholson - Monroe 855-859 Nora Goodwin - Monroe 1029-1032 Wayne Holliday - Monroe 1114-1121 Turner Jacobs - Monroe (of the Dr. Amos Ward family) 1302-1308 Victoria Randle Lawson - Monroe 1875-1876 Jane Rogers - Itawamba (of the James Whitesides family) 1933-1934 Hamp Simmons - Pontotoc (of the John Simmons family) 2127-2136 Emmeline Trott - Pontotoc (of the Turner Thompson family) 2140-2143 Molly Vance - Monroe (of the Lance Whitaker family) 2175-2177 George Ward - Pontotoc (of a Ledbetter family) 2214-2221 Eugenia Weatherall - Monroe (of a Lee County Bramlett family) 2313-2321 Frank Williams - Monroe (of the Tom Williams family) 2400-2406 Clara Young - Monroe (of an Aberdeen Ewing family) Hope this helps someone! These are really interesting and if someone were able to find an ancestor among these few people mentioned here, the narrative would definitely be something they should check into more. Dave Webb

The University of Mississippi library at Oxford, MS has a lot of old MS newspapers on microfilm that I have been told they interlibrary loan. I happened to be in Oxford about 3 weeks ago and went by the library. They do not have a print out with a list of these newspapers. However these newspapers are in a card file listed by city and by the name of the newspaper. I do not remember seeing any Fulton newspapers. I did write down that they have some from Aberdeen, Columbus, Corinth, Holly Springs, Panola County, Pontotoc, Tupelo, and a lot on Jackson. They had a lot of other cities also but I was just writing down those that were the nearest to Itawamba County. I personally haven't gotten any from there on interlibrary loan, but I do know someone that has. I suppose the easiest thing to do is to give your library the town and years you are interested in and have them write the Ole Miss library. Be sure to tell your local library that you heard that Ole Miss will interlibrary loan them. Another place that has old MS newspapers on microfilm is the Delta State Library at Cleveland, MS. I have gone up there several times and looked at the Tupelo paper but I do not know if they interlibrary loan them. The other place I know about is the MS Archives, but they do not interlibrary loan. Hope this helps those that were interested in newspapers Martha Bone Greenville, MS
Need 1840 Itawamba County, MS census lookup for Reed family. How many females are listed for JohnReed and Jincy Coffee? Cynthia Reed who married John W. Works on June 16, 1850 in Itawamba Counrty, MS. John Reed was born 1790 on his way from Ireland to Lancaster SC. His wife, Jincy Coffee, was born 1799 in Mecklenburg, NC. They had 8 known children Wm., Andrew, John or Jack G., Mark or Marcus, George, Martin Van Buren and Elizabeth. The only reason that Elizabeth is listed is because she shows up with her parents in the 1850 census. There is a LARGE gap between George and Martin where Cynthia might be placed. Any and all help sincerely appreciated. Ann
