    2. Mr Pate, Thank you so much for your contribution to the article. You helped in three ways. I did not know that the W in George W Sartor was for Washington, and I did not have dates or location of death. Now, perhaps I can learn the names of my third and fourth paternal grandmothers. Thank you so much. Jen'ee

    2. Dear Dianne, I am not sure I understand which mail you are referring too, however, if it is my communication to someone named Kay, I would like for you to know that I gave considerable thought to my response before sending it to the list as opposed to the individual. My feelings were that perhaps the list could profit too. If you are subscribed to this list then I am sure you saw the original communication from me to the list. I suppose I should say I am sorry, but I don't know what it is I am suppposed to be sorry for. Jen'ee PS I have sent this to the list also.

    2. Kay, I am not sure I understand your question. I do not know the year that George Sartor Sr or Jr were killed, I just know it was during the war. The weddings were in 1874. The article was published originally in 1930 and transcribed in 1987. I hope this answers your question. Jen'ee

    2. I have a copy of an article transcribed from the Fulton News Beacon May 8 1930, titled Historical Notes. This was printed in the Itawamba Settlers, Vol. V11 No 1, March 1987. The article is as follows: During the Civil War, some citizens were making a drive for deer. MR GEORGE SARTOR, SR., was on a stand near the spot where the Fairview School building now stands. A company of Tories came down the Eastport Road. Seeing the old man standing by a tree with his gun, without a word, shot him down. I think the same raid went on to MR ELIJAH SPEARMAN'S , robbed the house and fed their stock. Old man TOM BILLINGSLY, who lived, before the War, where MR SIDNEY WRIGHT now lives, on the old Russelville and Cotton Gin Road, he seemed to be the leader of the raid. He stepped up on the steps at SPEARMAN'S and said, "MRS . SPEARMAN, can I come in?" She gritted her teeth in his face and said, "You have got the power, sir." He then walked in. The widow CUMMINGS saved her husband's watch by dropping it behind a ceiling board. They searched for SPEARMAN'S money, going into the garden and digging around. Every now and then would hollow out, "here it is." BILLINGSLY was killed just after the surrender on the South side of Bull Mountain bottom near whee MR OSCAR LOCKBRIDGE now lives. GEORGE W SARTOR, JR., was killed in action in Gen. Bragg's army during the Civil War. He had three children. Two girls and one boy. In 1874 they were all married at home, by Rev J FBenson, near Halltown, Alabama under the same ceremony. JACK RABURN married MARY: ROBERT F LEE married JANE, and BILLIE married JENNETT CLEVELAND. If anyone has any information on any of the people listed in this article, please let me know. The Sartors and the Rev Benson are my people, and I need more information. I would like to know where their home was near Halltown, plus anything anyone can share. Could anyone be kind enough to get a copy of the 1850 and 1860 and 1870 census for Halltown showing these Sartors? Thank you. Jen'ee

    3. Hey Jo Carolyn Some of the soldiers were from the 31st Miss and there are not a roster list running for that unit that I am aware of.... My ancestor Thomas Jefferson Evans was one of those. There are a few that have not been placed in or on a roster list. Perry Evans Baltimore, MD John / Jo Carolyn Beebe wrote: > > Does anyone know of any descendants of William and Liddia VINSON? 3. Jo Carolyn, I am of no help with your question, but you have reminded me that I have ancestors who were in the Civil War who do not appear on any lists. I thought they must have gone in from Itawamba County, as they lived near the countuy line. Where did you find lists of Itawamba County soldiers? thanks, Ruby . ----- Original Message ----- From: John / Jo Carolyn Beebe <beehaven@alltel.net> To: <MSITAWAM-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2001 12:49 PM Subject: [MSITAWAM-L] William VINSON abt 1806 TN > > Does anyone know of any descendants of William and Liddia VINSON? 3. Does anyone know of any descendants of William and Liddia VINSON? They were in Monroe Co in 1850 and Itawamba Co in 1860. I think they may be the parents of John H. VINSON, my g-g-grandfather. He married Naomi H.S. LONG, dgt of Darling and Temperance LONG, in Itawamba Co in 1855, but does not appear on the 1860 census with her. I have lots of Long information but know nothing of John Vinson except an unproven statement that his father was "Billy Vinson," and he married Naomi. Supposedly, John died in the Civil War but I can't find him on any Itawamba rosters. Thanks. Jo Carolyn

    3. Hi Don -- Actually I'm trying to find someone who remembers more headstones in that cemetery. I'm pretty sure Nancy Ross Works was buried there and maybe John W. Works, Eli's eldest son. In a rather long rambling lawsuit James Franklin Works filed against his brother John, at one point he talks about John dying. Afterward, Cynthia Reed Works took her children and moved to DeKalb, Ala. Lorraine Graham Maxey, who lived nearby, once wrote me that Nancy was buried there. Of course Lorraine is not around anymore.
