Most of the Rootsweb sponsored obituary sites have a disclaimer that permission of the newspaper in which the obituary appeared must be obtained before posting it. I searched several online newspapers that post obituaries to see if they tended to claim copyright on them (since they are usually compiled by the funeral home with the assistance of survivors). Most have a copyright notice on that page. Some also have a disclaimer that their permission must be obtained before copying. That would extend to copying on listservs, web sites, etc. I think it would be much safer to call the Daily Journal and receive a blanket permission before doing any widespread obituary posting. You could get a blanket permission from the Itawamba County paper(s). If you obtain this (preferably in writing), you are assured you are not in copyright violation. By the way, the Mississippi site for obituary posting at Rootsweb is in need of adoption and has no obituaries posted. This would be a great place to archive the obituaries in a more permanent place. If someone decided to undertake this, s/he could take a look at the format of some of the states that have already undertaken this. It's okay to post the recent obituaries. They are public information. Don Pate posts many of them on the Itawamba message board currently. Is it okay to post recent obituaries from the local paper? I was thinking about doing this but since they are current would that be a problem? I live in Killeen, Texas but take the Austin American Statsman paper. I know this information would be valuable to someone. Thanks, Athena. Now if people would type up and post from there files, obits, newpapers article etc. it gets on line for all to see. Wayne did a great thing here and said will try to post more, the more people who go to the newspaper the more articles get on line. I use this site as a big safety deposit box, works for me. Don
Wayne, Thanks for these postings. They are a great source of items that add life to our genealogy. Is this newspaper available on-line? I remember as a young child that my Aunt had our visit posted in the newspaper's social section. Does anyone know where I could locate this type of article without going to MS? Barbara Tally Jones
It is out of print Barbara. Have been discussing having it re-printed with Wayne Loden. Ann
The Itawamba County Times (formerly the Fulton News Beacon) is not available online. Whenever I have time, I visit the office in Fulton, MS and they let me photocopy articles from their archives. I am posting all articles online through this mailing list and also at the Itawamba Forum at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/ms/itawamba/ I would hope that others will do the same. If we continue posting all of our articles, we will eventually have a great resource for all of us to draw information from. Most of these articles have never been seen by people living outside the county, and have been long forgotten. Wayne

I am trying again on my Brick wall. Looking for information on: James Thomas b 1 Jan 1789 p ? TN. d 16 Oct 1871 p Itawamba, MS. Married to: Mary Ann Page b 20 Jan1799 p ? NC d 7 Apr 1866 p Itawamba, MS. They are listed in the 1840 and 1850 Itawamba, MS. census. I have the list of most of their children and have some information from a copy of an old family Bible. I do not know where in TN he was born. The Itawamba census shows that he was from TN. I do not know who his parents are his siblings were. The same is true of Mary Ann PAGE. The census shows that she was from NC. The 1840 census shows that her mother was living with them in Ms. My father always said that they were Welsh. Any information would be appreciated. --- James Thomas --- 2pis4ces@gate.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.
