John Alfred Jerome "Rome" West was the son of John West, who was the son of Simon West and Nancy Thompson. I am related through Andrew West, the youngest son of Simon and Nancy West. I would appreciate any infro you may have on these families. 3. Forwarding this message for Ladonna Jones. If you can help, please respond directly to her at Ladonnajojones@cs.com Hello-- My name is Ladonna Jones and I live in Franklin County, Alabama. I am hoping that you can help me. My grandfather, Johnnie Winsted, was a former pastor at Sandy Springs Missionary Baptist Church. I think this church is in Itawamba County. We lost pawpaw to cancer in 1984. I have 2 children, a daughter who is 22 and a son who is 19. My daughter can remember pawpaw faintly, but my son never knew him. Recently he said that he wishes he could have heard pawpaw preach. I am trying to get in contact with someone who may have been going to Sandy Springs church during the time that pawpaw was pastor. Possibly they might have some tapes of some of his sermons. I am not sure where the church is located to go there and talk to people. I would love to be able to get in touch with someone that might could help me. Do you know anything about this church or possibly names of someone who attends? Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated. Ladonna Jones Ladonnajojones@cs.com

    3. Lay-By Time - Elmo Howell Since it's not on the calendar or in the dictionary, I shall define it. Lay-by time began on the Fourth and lasted till cotton picking -- The off-time of year, to pasture and watch crops grow; To fish (whether you wanted to or not) and hang out at the store; to help women put up gardenstuff and dry fruit in the back yard. (You spread it on top of the chickenhouse.) Time for the graveyard working and Big Meeting, which began on the first Sunday in August. But that's a country definition. Lay-by time (which doesn't happen today), was a pause in the blood -- a stillness struck by the sun. Time held up: The moment when the ball stands still in the sky before starting back to earth again. Some old people found it a good time to die. 3. Hello everyone, If you haven't heard of the author, Elmo Howell, I would like to introduce you to him. I saw an article about his books in a recent issue of The Itawamba County Times and found out he lived in Memphis. I called him and talked to him, and found a new friend. Mr. Howell was born in 1918 and lived most of his life in the Mt. Pleasant Community in Itawamba County. I have only purchased his new book, called "Mt. Pleasant" but plan to purchase his other three books on Mississippi. "Mt. Pleasant" is a book of poems and writings about the people of the Mt. Pleasant Community. He has even drawn a map in the book of the community and the people living there during the 1920's and 1930's. This book is poetry, and it brought back many great memories of Itawamba County for me. Here is an excerpt from the book: The Map "Mt. Pleasant began a long time ago, I don't believe anybody knows when - But I remember the old church and a graveyard half as big, with little trellised houses, cedar trees, and rock tombstones. We were a little country of our own back then, and the church with the store at the foot of the hill was the capital. We pretty much kept to ourselves. I spend a lot of time now getting about on my map -- stopping off at houses, with old faces coming to the door, old dogs barking. I like these people. I like to hear them talk about life -- what they were up to and how they took the weather; And that's what my poems are about." I asked him if he would allow me to put a couple of his poems on the internet, and he was happy to grant me permission. If you are interested in any of his books, he can be contacted at: Elmo Howell 3733 Douglass Avenue Memphis, TN 3811 901.323.5914 Books are titled: Mississippi Home Places - $14.95, Mississippi Scenes - $16.95, Mississippi Back Roads - 19.95, Mt. Pleasant - 9.95. Wayne

    3. Hi Warren, Here is the meager info I have on John Hester. He was the son of James Hester. Born 12/28/1812 in SC Died 11/14/1879 in Monroe County, MS Buried Hester Cemetery, Monroe Co., MS Married Nancy Cockrell 6/13/1844 in Carolina, Itawamba Co., MS. Nancy was born 2/1/1825 in AL She died 2/11/1907 in Monroe Co., MS She is also buried in Hester Cemetery, Monroe Co., MS. Do you have any additional info on John? I have more info on Nancy if you would like it. Like you I have a ggggrandfather and grandmother buried there somewhere in Carolina, but I have been unable to find them. They were there in the 1850 census but no succeeding ones. I have visited twice and plan on going back next spring to try and find more clues. The people at the courthouse were very friendly.
