The following information was copied from an 1891 edition of Goodspeed's History of Mississippi. M.C. Cummings Hon. M.C. Cummings, a prominent farmer and citizen of Itawamba county, Miss., was a son of Levy and Naoma (Keas) Cummings. He is the sixth of their family of eleven children, and was born in Limestone county, Ala., October 17, 1810. His father was born in Virginia about 1780, and was a member of one of the old families of that state who participated in the war of 1812. He was married in Virginia, and later removed to Kentucky, and thence to Limestone county, Ala., where he died in 1845. When he removed to Alabama the country was new and peopled with Indians, who were at one time so troublesome that he was obliged to leave the state, but returned a year or two later. He and his wife were members of the Primitive Baptist church. The latter died when Mr. Cummings, our subject, was about five years of age. She was a native of Virginia. The children were named Mason, Nancy, Jordan, Isaac, Catherine, David, M.C., Malachi, Levy, Rial, Betsey and Washington. Of these, only M.C., Levy and Rial are now living. The subject of this notice was reared upon his father's plantation, and began to do for himself at the age of eighteen years. He emigrated to Western Tennessee and settled near Perdy, where he engaged in planting. He lived there several years, and in February, 1833, came to Columbus, Miss., where he married Miss Sarah, daughter of Hugh and Jennie (Thompson) Rogers, who were natives of South Caroline. Their five children were named as follows: John, William, Hugh, Jennie and Joseph. Mrs. Cummings was born in South Caroline, in 1815. She has borne her husband no children, but they have reared twenty-seven orphan children. The family removed from Columbus to this county in 1836, and located on the present site of the Fulton hotel. Mr. Cummings was the first settler in Fulton, and came at a time when the country was practically unihabited except by Indians, who were not hostile, however, but showing good dispositions toward the settlers and who lived by hunting and fishing, some of them raising small patches of corn.
I have a web page devoted to data of the Franks family that settled in the Caney Fork area of White and Warren County, Tennessee in the early 1800's. Most of these families moved to Marion County, Alabama before 1830 and then to neighboring Itawamba County, Mississippi when that territory was opened for settlement. I would like to start a picture collection at the site of Caney Fork men and women and their descendants (deceased). If you have a picture that you would like to post, sent it to me at dickdfox@lockhart.net or dickdfox@lycosmail.com or to my home address. Don, Wouldn't you say his name was Mar or Mair (sounds the same) since he called his self that in those records and that obit has it that way? I don't even know where the Morrow came from? But it is similar sounding too. Don, I have recently found new information on Julie Ann from a distant cousin who found a bible record. Julie's full name from the bible was Julyan Sephrona Pace b. 16 Feb. 1841(I guess she was older than Peter!), and her mother was Christian Perry, William Pace's first wife who died probably around 1846 since William married Mary Ann Pollard in Feb. of 1847. Julie had 1 full sister and 1 brother from that marriage. Her sister was Martha Elizabeth b.1843 who died before 1850 and he renamed another daughter the same name by his second wife. I noticed in the bible that Julie's grandparents did that too, even mentioned that the second child was named for the one who died. The brother was Andrew who was still living in the household in 1860 Marion County AL, but I don't know what happened to him. Julie's step mother moved to TX with her son James Knox Polk Pace where she died in 1891. It is assumed that William died in AL. Julie did have one half-sister who lived in MS and is buried in the Henry Cemetery in Corinth. She was Sarah "Sallie" Pace Sweat married to Zachriah Taylor Sweat. I wonder if they were related to N. S. Sweat?? Uncle Jimmy (James M.) Franks middle initial gave me some trouble as I have seen at least 3 spellings for his name. There was an obit a few years ago for one of the children that listed the father as James Mar Franks, so I thought that was close enough for me, so I am using the middle name of Mar instead of Morrow, I can't recall the other spelling at this time. >From Itawamba Settlers, September 1987 Jan 2, 1908 .Mr C.A. Cleveland related to us a sad account of the death of his brother, Daniel Cleveland, whose home was near Pontotoc, and he was raised in this county near Eastman. After six days of suffering with pneumonia he died Wednesday December 18 and was interred Thursday. He leaves a wife very low with pheumonia... Jan 9, 1908 With great sadness we attempt to write an obituary of Richard A. Senter...He was botn the 17th day of February 1859...he died January 4, 1908...On Wednesday night after the 4th Sunday of September 1879 he professed a hope in Christ and joined the Baptist Church at Mt. Pleasant...He leaves a wife and seven children... Feb 13, 1908 The mighty hand of death visited the home of Brother Walter Lindsey and took from our midst his loving son, John Leonard, who was born August 5, 1887 and died February 5, 1908, age 20 years and six months. Thursday night after supper he was instantly taken sick of pheumonia and after five and a half days of intense suffering he departed this life at the home of Mr. W.M. Weeks where he had been hired to make a crop. Leonard was a member of the Farmer's Union at Liberty and had been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for about two and one-half years... Feb 20, 1908 The death angel came into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eck Wallace, Saturday, February 15, 1908 and took from their fond embrace, little Walker A., age one year and five months, their only child. Feb 27, 1908 Mr. George P. Pelot died last week at Memphis, where he had made his home since leaving Fulton, leaving a wife and three children...During his stay in Fulton he was married to a daughter of Captain and Mrs. Harriett Betts here... March 12, 1908 On the 9th day of February 1877, Dr. Bean was born near Cardsville...where he grew into manhood and spent most of his life. He joined the Hopewell Baptist Church in the year 1901 and remained a faithful member until his death, Friday, March 6, 1908. In March 1903 he was married to Miss. Mary Conwill...and to their marriage were born two children...The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Rogers of Amory and the remains were buried by the Masons at Key's Cemetery, Saturday, March 2. March 19, 1908 The news of the sad death of a 12-year old son of Mr. Lane Benson, brother of Rev. J.F. Benson, was received here last week. The Mart, Texas Daily Herald of March 2nd says, "Six little boys, Elbert Boughton, Robert Johnson, Harvey Benson, Dale Yancy, Rupert Gossett and Willie Riley, had in the childish fancies wandered to spend a few hours at fun and frolic...the old boat by a few devices known only to boyish pranks had been converted into a sail boat, and bore across the restless bosum of the 1 ake...these six little boys, when about in the middle where the water was about 10 or 15 feet deep, this improvised sail craft emptied its burden into the murky waters." And thus three of them drowned. Harvey Benson was a member of the Baptist Church.
>From Itawamba Settlers, September 1987 Raper Srings resort, located south of Tremont, was once a thriving place that was in existence until the earlt 1900's. The Raper family built a brick wall around seven springs that run out of the steep hillside. At one time there were several cabins and a hotel and the resort saw many visitors. Today the rock wall is still in place and clumps of flowers and piles of rocks are reminders of where houses once stood. Some members of the Raper family are buried here but only one marker has been found. Mrs. Lucille Raper Cody and her husband Purvis Cody still live in the community. Lucille is a descendant of Joseph Raper and his wife who moved their family to Oklahoma. However, some members of the family moved back to Mississippi. Markings on the one monument found are: F. G. Peter F. Franks was my great-great grandfather. He is buried at Keys Cemetery in Itawamba County. He married Julyan S. Pace ("Julie or Julia") in Memphis while in service during the civil war.
