I can't find Garrett Keirn on any of the Holmes County Cemetery pages. I did find Claudine Durden Keirn b. Apr 11, 1848 d. Apr 23, 1912 and Walter Leake Keirn b. May 4, 1830 d. Jan 5, 1901. Two other markers indicate that they were the children of Walter L. and Claudine Durden Keirn, so Claudine must have been the wife of Walter Leake. I found Garrett on the 1840 Census, but of course there were no other names. Apparently he died before the 1850 Census. the 1850 Census has a Sisy Keirn Age 48 born VA Value of real estate owned: 40,000. Living with her were two sons, Vindex Keirn Age 22 born MS and Walter Keirn Age 20 born in MS. There is an old Keirn Cemetery out near Acona, MS and the only two markers that were visible when recorded in 1952 were Vindex Keirn d. Oct 22, 1852 aged 24 yrs 8 months 22 days and Lucy Keirn b. Jul 30, 1855 d. Oct 1, 1856. This may be the daughter of Walter Leake. This Keirn Cemetery may be completely lost by now. It appears on the map as being about a mile from any present day road. If I can be of further help, let me know. Dudley Warren & Sue wrote: >Hi, >I am looking for information on Garrett Keirn of Holmes co, Mississippi. Thank you for your response..I have to apologize, I gave some wrong information on the wife of Garrett Keirn. Garrett's wife was Lucy Leake. Lucy was born in Virginia and Garrett was born in Maryland. Garrett studied and became a doctor in Maryland, and then married Lucy Leake from a well to do family in Virginia. They came to Mississippi in the 1830's and owned a store in Rocky Springs, Claiborne Co, Ms. Garrett became a Mississippi Senator in the years 1837 to 1846. I am not sure what county he was living in at the time. He was a large land owner and had many slaves in the 1840's and 50's. Sisy might be his wife, Lucy. I know Garrett had two sons, Walter and Vindex. I am told that Vindex died by gunshot, but I do not know the circumstances. I know that Walter and his wife, Claudine, are buried in Lexington, Holmes Co, Ms. Thank you the info on Vindex, that is new to me. Maybe Garrett and Lucy are buried there. Are there any other records I could look up or send for to find Garrett. One would think that a Mississippi Senator, and one of the first three senators for the state would have some life information written on him...what do you think...thanks for your time....Warren...ps...Garrett was the brother of my 4th great grandfather, and the only one to venture to the south. He was a wealthy man for his time, so I thought he would have something on his life somewhere down there. He was born abt 1790. Lucy was born abt 1800, so Sisy fits her. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dudley Rinicker" <rinicker@netdoor.com> To: <MSHOLMES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 7:37 PM Subject: Re: [MSHOLMES] Garrett Keirn > I can't find Garrett Keirn on any of the Holmes County Cemetery pages. > I did find Claudine Durden Keirn b.
