Does anyone know of Rebecca Brantley Cooper? Her dob would have been 1830, Yalobusha Co, MS. Her maiden name: Nations. She married John Ransom Brantley and they had 2 girls. John Ransom Brantley was killed in Texas in 1859. I have just been told that she remarried a man named 'Cooper' and that they had one daughter named Hannah Cooper. And they lived in Holmes County. Rebecca is thought to have died in 1863 in Holmes County. Does anyone know of this man named "Cooper' - or his daughter Hannah? Or perhaps where his wife Rebecca may have been buried? Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Edith

Jan and David, I know of no volunteer "company" raised in Holmes County that was engaged in the Mexican War. However, men from Holmes County, along with many from Madison and Attala Counties, joined Captain Adam McWillie's (of Madison County) 2nd Infantry Regiment raised in the latter part of 1846. The fact that Holmes County men, along with men from Attala County, joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment, raised in Madison County, may indicate that no such Regiment or Company was organized in Holmes County - or, wouldn't they have joined their own Holmes County unit? This is just a guess on my part. This information came from page 30, Kosciusko - Attala History. However, Chapter 4, History of Kosciusko and Attala County by J.H. Wallace (1916) includes a list of those men who served in Adam McWillie's 2nd Infantry Regiment, and goes on to say, "The company left the State for the scene of war in the fall of 1846, and as we had no railroads or other means of transportation in those days, the soldiers had to leave marching on foot. The detachment which left Attala marched to Canton, where they were joined by the detachments from Madison and Holmes and the full company duly organized." This quotation would seem to indicate that "detachments" were formed in Holmes County. Whether they were of Regimental or Company size or smaller (more likely?) remains to be seen. I found selected minutes of Masonic Lodge No. 24, Lexington, Holmes County from June 24, 1840 - January 4, 1851 in the Lexington City Library. That Lodge was chartered in 1835 at which time Lexington had a population of 300. Additional information on Masonry in Lexington (a general history, also in the Lexington Library) was found in a publication "Lexington, Mississippi, Holmes County, 1833 - 1976, 'Clubs and Organizations' " compiled by the members of the Magnolia Garden Club, and published by the messenger press, Florence, MS in 1976. I am trying to find descendants of my great-great grandfather William Nevels who was born in Mississippi in 1808. In the 1880 census of Holmes Co., MS, William states that his father was born in SC and his mother in VA. I think William's father is James Nevill/Nevels who lived in Jefferson Co., Hinds Co., and Holmes Co.. James would have been born ca. 1770-80; wife possibly Elizabeth Roberts. Below is the information I have on William (copied from a family Bible and researched through census, family information, newspaper accounts, cemetery records, death certificates, etc. (no marriage certificates because of courthouse fire in Holmes Co., MS). William Nevels, b. 8 March 1808, probably Jefferson Co., MS; d. 22 Oct 1883, Holmes Co, MS. May have lived in other MS counties, including Hinds, before coming to Holmes Co. Brothers and sisters of William Nevels, b. 1808 (taken from family record): Isaac Nevels, b. 16 April 1812 Betsey Ann Nevels, b. 15 March 1816 James Gardner Nevels, b. 6 Sept. 1818 Sarah Jane Nevels, b. 4 Jan 1821 Hiram M. (Mordecai ??) Nevels, b. 24. Dec. 1823 Lucinda Nevels, b. 11 Nov. 1825 Martin Nevels, b. 8 March 1828 The above William J. Nevels married (1) 4 June 1834, Mary J. Nevel (Nevil, Nevill), b. 15 Feb. 1817, in Mississippi, probably Jefferson County. (Nevel/Nevil/Nevill was her maiden name.) I am trying to verify that her father was Thomas Neville who was in Holmes Co., MS in 1840. Thomas is possibly the son of Philip Nevill who was in Jefferson Co., MS in late 1790s - early 1800s. My grandfather stated that Mary J. Nevel was the daughter of a Nevill(s) and a Peyton. Children of William J. and Mary J. (Nevel/Nevill) Nevels: 1. Julia Ann Nevels, b. 9 Feb. 1838; m.
