Dear Nancy, Greetings from Seattle. There was indeed an Independence School. I attended Central Consolidated H.S. (4 miles east of Hamburg on the Meadville Road). Our basketball teams (boys and girls) would often play Independence. I noted that Miss Vivia Martin was one of the teachers. I did not know that she ever taught at Independence. She was one of two teachers at the Hamburg Elementery School which closed in 1930 or 31 and all the kids and teachers moved to Central. "Miss Viv" was my 2nd and 3rd grade teacher and I rate her "tops" of all the teachers I have had (And that includes college and graduate school) After Central burned around 1944, Miss Viv continued teaching in Roxie. She passed away about 2 years ago. She has one remaining sister, Ruth Calcote in Prentiss, Ms. Fulton Harrigill
>>Zeke Allred is more that likely Martin Ezekiel Allred born >>11-11-1884 died 2-25-1955, his first wife died 5-5-1921. Robert, I'm thinking that may have been this Zeke's father? Because this Zeke looks to only be in his 20's and this was in the late 1920's, so the 1884 birth date would be way too early. There are lots of photos of Mr. Allred.....it seems he and my mom were "an item" in those days. . I'll get the photos off to you next week, including the one of Zeke posing by his "new" Ford. Thanks for inquiring about the name for me! Sonya, Is the school still there? I thought it might be gone by now. I have a photo of my mom with a fairly large two story building in the background.....I wonder if that's the Consolidated Independence school or the Copiah-Lincoln Teacher's College? It's situated in a large open area, with trees in the distant background. Of course, I'm sure the landscape's changed, but I'd love to know which school this is. Would you know from the description which it might be? Unfortunately, the only photos that are identified are the ones I listed, all the rest, children and teachers, are unlabeled. My mom has a remarkable memory for her age, but this is going back pretty far and she hasn't been able to remember anyone else's name. It's a shame, too, because there are so many people in the photos, probably half the ancestors of all the folks on this list! (Not to mention some great photos of Model-T's!) Be happy to send you the ones of Wactor and Allred, if you'd like. Hi everyone, My mom just unearthed a photo album with pictures that were taken during her two years as a teacher at a school located not too far from Meadville, in Franklin Co. She taught there right after receiving her teacher's license, so the dates would be in the late 1920's. She believes the name was Consolidated Independence School. It contained all grades, 1st through high school. Most of the pictures aren't labeled and names of the students and teachers have been forgotten. But there are a few with names. If you recognize any of these names as members of your family and you'd like a copy of the photo, I'd be glad to send it to you. I don't have a scanner, so it would have to be by snail mail. There's a photo of the principal of the school, Mr. WACTOR, and the following teachers: Ruby TYNES Vivian MARTIN Arleen BARLOW Mrs. McGEHEE Mrs. COWART Florelle GARRETT (my mom) The only other photos that are labeled are several of a young man named Zeke ALLRED. My mother explained that they were "courting" at the time. :-) It's a shame more people aren't identified, because there are at least a hundred photos, many taken at the old Copiah-Lincoln Teachers' College (as my mom remembers the name). If any of you know either of these schools by a different name, I'd be grateful for that information, so I can label them properly (better late than never!). Nancy, researching in Jefferson/Franklin Co.: Garrett; Dawkins; Carmichael; McCormick; Osborne; Warren; Stringer "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one." -Albert Einstein
Marie, Since Director Smith married James Henry Stampley in Jefferson County in January 1824 it is very possible she may have been from either of the two Smith families enumerated in the 1820 JC census. The head of household for these families was John Smith and Archibald Smith. Tony
Hello, I am posting this Smith information in the hopes that it will connect to someone and give us both a little more information. I have a little more information on some of these individuals but not much. Some of them, I have nothing further. This information was written by a grandchild who knew lots of the people. One of these people ties into a Ferrell line in Copiah Co. that is my husband's line. But, so many of these have McCall Creek associations that I'm posting on these two boards. What I'm posting below is copied almost verbatim from the information given me by a Mrs. Horton. She did not have the name of Vines Smith's second wife. She also was not certain of the third wife's last name. Vines Smith lived in Georgia in 1830 but later moved to Coosa County, AL. He was married three times and the father of 21 children. There were 14 children named in his will. Vines Smith married Rebeckah Powell on September 13, 1810 in Oglethorpe County, GA. She was probably his first wife. Vines Smith had a will in Coosa County, AL. Children of Vines Smith and Rebeckah Powell 1. William E. Smith 2. Signal M. Smith 3. Hardaway Smith 4. Thomas B. Smith 5. Seaborn J. Smith-died before 1852 children with second wife 6. Catharin (married a Scoggin) 7. Elizabeth ( married a Waters) 8. Mary (Johnson) 9. Louisa (Smith) 10. Lucy (Amos) 1823-1913 11.Sarah Ann (Ferrell) 1830-1895 (this is my husband's line) children with third wife listed as Harriett...probably the widow Jones 12. Harriett Jones Smith 13. Josephine Smith 14. James Polk Smith The last three are listed as given me. Apparently, these last names are not married names. Mrs. Horton apparently did not have the names of all 21 children and listed the 14 she knew about. Since some of the Ferrell information ties in I'm going to put in what she said about Sarah Ann Smith and Thaddeous Ferrell, her husband. Thaddeous C. Ferrell and Sarah Ann Smith married in Coosa County, AL. They were both born in Georgia. After their marriage they lived on a farm in Tallapoosa County, AL. on the Coosa River for two years. In 1854 Thaddeous, one of his brothers, and one or two other family members decided to move to Texas. When they were almost across the state of MS., Thaddeous and Sarah's second child was born. This was May of 1854. They settled in MS. while the others went on to Texas. I hope this ties into someone's information. If it does, please let me know how it connects. Marie
There was also a William B. Smith in Natchez before 1800, who married Ann Alexander Thompson, widow of Richard Thompson of Natchez. He died about 1806. He MAY have been the William Smith who was one of the eight sons of Jedediah Smith who migrated to Natchez from Massachusetts in 1776. William B. and Ann had a son William B. Jr. There was a young William B. Smith who served as witness at the 1807 wedding of Courtland Smith (brother of William Smith) in Feliciana. And a Dr. William B. Smith Jr. m. widow Eleanor Smith in Baton Rouge about 1831. She was the daughter-in-law of another brother to William and Courtland. No one has been able to sort this all out! E. W. Prichard researching SMITH, BAKER, COBB, COOPER, DUNN, ROBERTS, WOODWARD & related families in SW MS and the Florida parishes of LA, 1776-1900, including BUHLER, DEVALL, LILLEY, BARNETT in East Baton Rouge Parish; also CARSON in St. Mary Parish; also PRICHARD, BYRD, HERRINGTON, STRINGER in Franklin County, MS.

I am looking for more information on George Smith who was married in Charleston District, South Carolina to Mary ________ 24 June 1794 at St. Bartholomew Parish. The only child that I have is William B. Smith who married Frances Scott in 1816. There must be someone out there that would have some more info on this family, somewhere. I have a Bible Record of William B. Smith from the Cemetery and Bible Records of Mississippi in vol. 2, pages 107-8 and this gives his family but no marriages. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ed, According to one of Barefoot Benny's step daughters he only had four wives: 1st - Clara, 2nd - Mamie Johnson Rushing, and two others. He counted his step children when counting how many children he had. According to this step daughter he was a good, caring father to all the children. I have been reading all the activity on this list. You are a very busy man and yet you unselfishly share information to all. I am connected to many of the lines you have mentioned, Hall, Lofton, Nettles, McIntyre, Ratcliff, to name a few. When your life gets slower I would like to check back with you on some of them. RIGGS, b. abt 1838, AL 7. Sarah A. RIGGS, b. abt 1840, AL. They are shown on the 1850 Tishomingo Co., MS census with a Melinda RIGGS, who may not have been the birth mother. Any help is greatly appreciated. Peggy Riggs Kopp
