    3. Hi gang! I am working on some Franklin County School Data and I need some info! Can anyone tell me where the Homochitto School was? There is a school reunion on the April 12, 2003 and all the announcement says is that it will be on the old school grounds! Since I did not attend, I don't know where it is, but I would love to go and take photos and gather information for our Franklin County History Project! I also plan to attend the McCall School Reunion on May 17, 2003 at McCall Baptist Church. If anyone knows of any other reunions, family or school, I am setting up a Reunion page and would be happy to announce them! Also there will be a Confederate Grave Dedication here at the Roxie Cemetery on April 12, 2003 at 2:00 P.M., honoring Hiram Reynolds, if anyone would like to attend. 3. If you could just tell me the lady's name who has put all that Confererate War History together, then maybe I could get together with her next time I come up to the McCall Creek Reunion. I have noticed on the list that everyone is WAY ahead of me, but I know there are people who have already made inroads. Thanks for your response. It is great to connect with someone who knew my grandparents and father! However, they don't have many indexes yet. > (Think I noticed they have indexed the 1870 MS census.) Do not order the Heritage Quest 1870 indexed CD. I have the one for Wilkinson county and it is worse than useless. To search the census you have to type in the surname and the index will go to those names and open those pages, and only those pages. I typed in Cavin and got two families. I happen to know there where 4 Cavin family on this census. I have the microfilm on indefinite loan at the FHC. I have yet to find a way to get to the other two Cavin families. I know where they are, but I can't get this program to allow me to pull them up. I find reading the census, page by page, may be time consuming but it worth the effort. There are usually other family members spread around that you may not know about. There will be neighbors who may be related, or their children may marry into this family later on. when you have a choice, always go for the original source. Virginia

    3. Bill, I have a number of Heritage Quest census CDs and they are by far the best that are available. However, they don't have many indexes yet. (Think I noticed they have indexed the 1870 MS census.) I was hopeful the the Ancestry Census Indexes would identify page numbers so I could get into the HQ CDs and find information I was after without going page by page. This does not work when they have so many holidays in their information. Maybe someday this will be a reality. Tony ==== MSFRANKL Mailing List ==== >"Oh where, oh where, have my ancestors gone? Box 571 Jackson, MS 39205=0571 Tele: (601) 359-5876 Fax: (601) 359-6964 Email [MS residents]: [email protected] How do I get research material from the Archives? 1. You may come in person to conduct research. Since this is a reference library, no materials can be checked out, but you are welcome to make photocopies (except when collection restrictions apply). 2. You may request in writing that MDAH reference staff members conduct research for you. One hour of research is provided free to Mississippi residents (a street address is required). Research is provided to nonresidents at $15 per hour. We can do only one hour of research per request; requests including payment for additional hours will be returned to sender. All requests should include a return address since responses are made by U.S. mail. Requests from Mississippi residents may be faxed to (601) 359-6964 or emailed to [email protected] Because out-of-state research requests must be prepaid, fax and email requests are not accepted from out of state. 3. You may contract with a freelance researcher. Can I obtain materials on inter-library loan? Because we are a reference library and our materials do not circulate, we do not participate in the inter-library loan program. What newspapers do you have? Are they indexed? We have a large collection of newspapers (dating from as early as 1801) as well as most of the current newspapers available in Mississippi. Our newspapers are not indexed but holdings are searchable. The following are the newspapers that the Archives have with "Magnolia" in its name from Pike Co., MS. Pike: Magnolia news (Magnolia, Miss.) Please use the white call slips to request this roll. 3. Everyone, I've finished transcribing Union Church Cemetery, in Jefferson County, to my website. It's taken from an older survey, so burials that have taken place since this time will not be recorded. If you find any errors, please let me know! http://www.geocities.com/twincousin2334/Union_Church_Cemetery.html Nancy, researching in MS: Garrett; McCormick; Carmichael; Dawkins; Osborne; Warren; and, as I've just discovered, Baldridge! 3. Charlotte, Page 296 of the Franklin County Cemetery book published by the Mogens in 1982 mentioned they did not find the HAVIS Cemetery but it was supposed to be northwest of Meadville, Rt 1, on the property of J.W. Sullivan. It also mentioned that this cemetery had been listed in Mississippi Bible & Cemetery Records, Volume 12:149. If your library does not have this book, I'm pretty sure that the LDS libraries can order it on microfiche from SLC. If I recall correctly it contains MS Bible & Cemetery Records Volumes I - XX and the cost is next to nothing like 75 cents for permanent loan. I have some HAVIS information in my database since they are connected to some of my families. Tony Miller in Calabasas, CA
