    1. Re: [MSFRANKL-L] Campbells
    2. Marie, While Charles C. Campbell may have been in Franklin County in 1820, he does not appear to be related to Christopher C. Campbell who arrived in Hamburg, MS in the 1840s from SC and was the local doctor, lawyer, and justice of the peace. He was b. in Sumpter, SC in 1818 and d. at Brown's Wells, Copiah Co.,MS in October 1866. Christopher C. Campbell m/1 Mary Louisa Bowen in SC; m/2 Melinda C. Guice in Franklin Co.,MS on 24 May 1848: and m/3 Mary Elizabeth Griffing in Franklin Co.,MS on 8 Nov 1854. I know about these people because of my connection to the Guices and Griffings. Mary Elizabeth Griffing was my ggg grandmother's younger sister. Dr. Campbell is mentioned in the Darden diary and was a witness on lots of papers during his stay in Hamburg, such as the will of Littleton Mundy. The true expert on the Christopher C. Campbell line is Jewel Bragg in AL. If there is any possible connection between these Campbells she would instantly know. However, I understand she may be busy honing her skills as the best interior decorator in the Southeast. Tony Miller

    3. This was on the Adams County page. I thought I would send it on to the Franklin County page. I know some of you have Campbells. Marie Hi all, I'm new to this list and I'm hoping that someone here can help me out. Charles C. CAMPBELL married Selah CARTER in Natchez, Adams Co. Sep. 1813. I haven't a clue as to how long Charles was in MS before this marriage, but have come across a few CAMPBELL's in the area at a very early time. One Charles CAMPBELL appears on a petition list in 1779, there's also an Ant(h)ony CAMPBELL on the 1818 Tax Rolls and 1820/30 census, also a W.H CAMPBELL in 1820 census. I know there was a Katherine CAMPBELL who married Samuel SWAYZE in 1799. My Charles is living in Franklin Co in 1820 and there are no other CAMPBELL's in that Co. So I'd like to gather info. on all of these CAMPBELL's. I'm curious to know whether or not they are all related to my Charles. Is anyone researching the Adams Co. CAMPBELL's??? If so please contact me. Thanks for your time, Sharla Linex Researching maternal: BRANCH, CALLAWAY, CAMPBELL, CARTER, COKER, DAWSON, DEATS, EVANS, HOLDEN, NICKS paternal: BOSTICK, BURDETTE, EASTERLY, EPPINETTE, HORN, LENOX/LENNOX/LINEX, WILLIAMSON

    2. Thanks Robin I usually just list her as Ann. I have photo's of her toombstone but can't remember whats on there. I believe it's just Ann Jones. She is buried at New Hope Baptist Cemetary. But on the census records she is listed as all those names with Hezikiah being the head up until 1900 and then I believe its just Ann Jones. She lived with my Ggrandfather and mother for many years because she had a broken hip that could not be set in those days. My G grandfather used to go to Meadville and get her candy and snacks. This according to my Grandfather Jim McCaa. I was told that she was spainard but some say Cuban?? Also I've heard that she was a Jew?? Does anyone know about the Lazurus line being Jewish?? I do know there was a synagogue in Natchez after the Civil war?? Leon McCaa

    2. I am not familar with Hezikiah Jones parents or siblings. I do know that was a Franklin Parish, La. connection because I have heard that several Jones cousins lived there. There was a Dr. Jones in Wisner, La. in the 40's and 50's. I was born in Franklin Parish La. myself, but am not familar with that line that you mentioned. Someone else on the site may have info on that?? Leon McCaa

    3. Leon, Ava Ann Lazarus is how I have her listed. I haven't seen her in a census record but I do have a legal paper from the Adams Co Court House. Dated 1-7-1844. Mary Wise to Elizabeth Horton et al. ........for the sum of fiive dollars......of the love and affection which she has for the parties of the second part.......to Elizabeth Horton a negro boy Alfred aged 8 and a slave for life and also the following lotof ground lying in the town of Washington........To Elizabrth Phipps the remaining part of the above discribed lot......To Edward Lazarus, Shadrack Lazarus, Nicholas Lazarus, Cortney Lazarus, Mary Frances Lazarus & Ava Ann Lazarus a negro girl Mary aged 13 ........ It is possible that her name is written Ana Ann. The Mary Wise was Mary Lazarus who married Samuel Martin in 1825 and then Willian Wise in 1838. The Elizabeth Phipps was Elizabeth "Betsy" Lazarus who married Wilson Phipps in 1830. I am not sure about Elizabeth Horton. But there was a Elizabeth Lazarus that married Thomas Hannon. But I was never able to find her after she married. The children listed with Ava Ann are more than likely her siblings. They are the children of Edward Porter Lazarus and Melinda Peas. 3. I received this from another person connected to the Lazarus family. Her direct ancestor changed his name to LARENDON, however. Do any of the names sound familiar to any of you also connected to the Lazarus family in Franklin/Adams counties? Thanks! Debbie = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = -- surely it can't be coincidence that we are both looking for Lazarus' out of South Carlina and Natchez?! My family starts with Marks Lazarus (Rev War Soldier) and his wife, Rachel DeTorres in Charleston (some discrepancies on her maiden name). They had a ton of kids. The family that was in Natches was Joshua Lazarus (Larendon) that married into the Scudamore family. (1) Michael Lazarus and Unknown in CHarleston (2) Marks Lazarus (1757-1835) married Rachel Doris/De Torres (died in late 1800's). He fought in the Revolutionary War. I'm descended from: (3) Aaron Lazarus married Caroline Jacobs --they had: (4) Son: Gershon Larendon Lazarus married Esther Cohen they had Joshua (Mine), Leila, Walter, Michael , Gustavus, and CHarles - not necesarily in that order. Leila, Walter and Gustavus settled in Atlanta, Michael in NY, Joshua in Houston and CHarles bounced around but ended up in New Orleans. (5) Joshua Larendon married Marie Anais Pasdeloup --Josh married Marie in Houston. Josh and his siblings (above) were the first to use Larendon instead of Lazarus. Possibly from their father's middle name which I have seen as Larendon and Clarendon (which is a county in SC)/ (6) Son : George Washington Larendon marries Jane Hopkins Scudamore of Natchez. They raised their son Protestant but George's siblings all married Jewish and the descendents are still Jewish. My Natchez line was Robert Scudamore- Isabelle Hopkins.

    2. Janice Bivens
    3. I am also researching the GIBSON Family. My third great-grandfather was John P. (some say the middle initial stood for "Pate", some say "Pittman"...) Gibson. His wife was Margaret J. Williams Gibson. John Gibson was born approx. 1799 in SC and moved to MS after 1820. Margaret J(ane) Williams Gibson was b. approx. 1820 and married John in 1843 in Monroe Co., MS. Joseph Gibson of Aberdeen (Monroe Co.) was a witness at the ceremony. Joseph Gibson left records of land ownership in Monroe Co., but I am unable to determine what relation John was to Joseph. Also, I have located John and Margaret Gibson and their family on 1860 and 1870 U.S. Census Records....1860 in Calhoun Co., near Cherry Hill and 1870 in Calhoun Co. (now Carroll Co.) near Duck Hill. John and Margaret had several children: Francis, Asberry, Sarah, Mary, Martha, Rebecca, and Malverda (aka Melverda, Melvertie). Melvertie (called "Vertie" ) was my great-great-grandmother. She had two children by "Will" or "Wilds" Merriweather, who according to family legend, left Melvertie with the two children when they were young. One of those children, Margaret Sue Merriweather, was my great-grandmother, and I knew her in my lifetime. Melvertie later remarried Newell Autry Felts in Tallahatchie Co. about 1890. I have run into many "dead ends" or "brick walls" when searching for the Merriweather, Gibson, and Williams families in the counties mentioned above. Maybe Franklin County has some information. Thanks. Janice Branch Bivens Bedford, TX > > > Henry Gibson and his sisters Susan Gibson and Georgia Gibson owned land > in Franklin County before 1900. 2. I would agree with Debbie it sounds like my GGgrandmother Ane Lazurus Jones, who was married to Hezikiah. Mary T. Jones b. 1850 was my Ggrandmother and married David Monroe McCaa in 1868. I do have the Jones family in my files if you are interested, I will be glad to post what I have on them. There are still quiet a few Jones descendants living in Franklin Co. Ms. Maybe those descendants could shed light on this also, if they are on this rootsweb site. I'm sure that I have my Ggrandmothers brothers and sisters and their spouses. I have tried to contact descendants with not much success. There are several who are active in Sarepta Baptist Church also whose names I don't have. I talked with them while visiting there. 3. Loretta, I wonder if the "Oma Anne Jones" on the census is actually Ava Anne Lazarus Jones born about 1824 and who married Hezikiah Jones. Her name is also shown as "Arann" or "Avan Ann" in other places. I don't have all their children's names, only Mary and John Wesley. Also, I don't have the age of Hezekiah but "Oma" would be about the right age for Ava Anne/Arann. Maybe Leon McCaa can shed some additional light on this theory. In my Ezell info, I have Joseph as being married to Anna Jane Jones, b. about 1852, d. 1936 and buried in Oakley Cemetery, Franklin Parish, LA but no other details as to who her parents were, etc. Let me know what you find out.
